In this hauntingly beautiful 13-minute South Korean short film, a man's phone call becomes a portal to a shattered romance. Through fragmented flashbacks, we witness the tender moments of a once-joyful relationship between two men—one now reflecting on what went wrong. The film's central question echoes throughout: 'You used to smile that way... but why?' As the protagonist grapples with memories of laughter, intimacy, and a devastating betrayal, the story explores infidelity, heartbreak, and the painful gap between past happiness and present sorrow. Directorially sparse yet emotionally dense, this film relies on poetic internal monologue, melancholic saxophone and piano score, and expressive close-ups to convey its gut-wrenching narrative. A poignant meditation on love, loss, and the mysteries of a partner's changing heart, it leaves viewers with more questions than answers—but that ambiguity is precisely its power.

I was blown away by the visual storytelling in just 13 minutes. The grainy 2009 film stock, the soft-focus flashbacks, the way natural light falls on the protagonist's face—it's like watching a painting come to life. The saxophone and piano score perfectly underscores the melancholic tone. A must-watch for anyone who loves cinema as art.

Even though it's super short and devastating, I felt the chemistry between the two leads in those fleeting flashback moments. That one kiss in the rain? Heartbreakingly beautiful. I wish we'd gotten more of their happy times before the breakdown. Still, it's a raw and honest look at love falling apart—and that made me appreciate what they had even more.

I get that it's supposed to be poetic, but the lack of concrete storytelling left me frustrated. The internal monologue felt pretentious, and I couldn't connect to the characters because we barely know them. The title spoils the central question. For a film about infidelity, it tells us nothing about why it happened. At only 13 minutes, it still felt too long.

The music is the real star here—that melancholic saxophone theme is haunting and perfectly captures the regret. The piano overlay during the 'you used to smile' line gave me chills. But the voiceover sometimes clashed with the music, and the audio mixing from 2009 is a bit rough. Worth a listen with good headphones.

As a short film from 2009, it's interesting to see early queer Korean representation, but the narrative centers entirely on the heartbroken protagonist's pain while the 'other man' remains a silent, almost villainous figure. We never get his perspective. The infidelity is presented as a simple betrayal without exploring the complexities of queer relationships in a conservative society. It feels emotionally honest but one-dimensional.
