Set in the hallways and classrooms of a Taiwanese high school, 'You Are a Bitch Who Took My Place' is a short film that explores the tangled emotions of teenage love, jealousy, and self-discovery. Chen Wei, the class’s top student, finds himself drawn to the charismatic Yi Huan, who repeatedly seeks his help studying. But Chen Wei’s best friend, Zhong Da, is suspicious of Yi Huan’s motives and tries to protect Chen Wei from what he sees as a manipulative relationship. As the trio’s dynamics shift, Chen Wei must confront his own feelings—both for Yi Huan and for Zhong Da—while navigating the blurred lines between friendship, romance, and unrequited longing. With a focus on queer identity and the bittersweet ache of first love, this indie Taiwanese gem captures the vulnerability and confusion of adolescence in a compact, emotionally charged narrative.

I went in expecting a messy love triangle, but I left genuinely touched by Chen Wei's journey. The way he wrestles with his feelings for both Yi Huan and Zhong Da felt so real. It's short but definitely packs an emotional punch. Wish it was longer to flesh out the characters more!

The premise is intriguing, but the execution falls flat. The characters are one-dimensional, the dialogue feels forced, and the love triangle lacks genuine chemistry. I understand it's a short film, but that doesn't excuse the shallow plot. The only saving grace is the representation of a bi male lead, which is still rare.

I appreciate that the film doesn't shy away from showing a bisexual teenage boy's confusion and the pressure of being caught between a girl and his best friend. However, the female lead Yi Huan felt underused and almost villainized, which I found problematic. The emotional beats are there, but the story needed more nuance.

The cinematography is surprisingly good for a low-budget short—soft lighting, warm tones, and intimate close-ups that really sell the angst. The scene in the empty classroom where Chen Wei and Zhong Da almost talk about their feelings is beautifully framed. A visual treat despite the narrative gaps.

The soundtrack had a few decent indie tracks that matched the melancholic vibe, but overall the sound design felt inconsistent—some scenes had awkward silence. The ending theme song was the highlight for me. As a short film, it's a mixed bag of potential and missed opportunities.
