In the heart of a sleepy Tokyo neighborhood, a quiet, hardworking barista named Haruki finds his predictable life shaken when the local 'bad boy,' Ryo, starts frequenting his café. Ryo, with his leather jacket, sharp tongue, and rumors of a turbulent past, seems the polar opposite of gentle, cautious Haruki. Yet over shared bottles of fizzy cream soda and quiet evening shifts, an unlikely bond forms—one built on stolen glances, tentative conversations, and the slow realization that first impressions can be deceiving. This two-episode miniseries from Japan captures a tender, fast-blooming romance that asks whether love can truly transform someone, or if it just takes the right person to see past the walls. Brimming with cozy café aesthetics and a sweetly old-fashioned charm, Cream Soda Love is a nostalgic, low-stakes treat for fans of short-form BL who believe that even a bad boy can melt for a good cup of cream soda.

I absolutely melted watching Haruki and Ryo slowly open up to each other over those cream sodas. Yes, it's only two episodes, but every moment is packed with tender glances and quiet butterflies. The kiss at the end was worth the whole wait. I'm already rewatching it!

I wanted to like this, but the pacing is a mess—Ryo goes from intimidating stranger to soft boyfriend in what feels like one scene. There's no real character development, just a checklist of tropes. For a two-episode series, they could have at least given us a proper conflict. Felt unfinished.

The cinematography is genuinely lovely—every frame of the café is bathed in warm golden tones, and the cream soda glasses sparkle like jewels. The director clearly put effort into visual storytelling even with a tiny budget. The only reason I'm not rating higher is the story felt too rushed to match the pretty pictures.

I appreciate the attempt at a 'bad boy with a soft heart' narrative, but Ryo's aggressive behavior early on—grabbing Haruki's wrist, cornering him—isn't framed as problematic. For a 2025 BL, I expected more awareness of boundaries. The café setting was cute, but the power imbalance made me uncomfortable.

The background piano pieces and the gentle lo-fi beats really set the mood, and the ending song—'Cream Soda Memories'—is stuck in my head. Too bad the soundtrack isn't on streaming platforms yet. The show itself is a bit thin, but I'd listen to the OST on repeat.
