In the hallways of a Japanese high school, Riku and Keita are navigating the sweet, secret terrain of first love—but their relationship exists in the shadows. Riku is the effortlessly popular golden boy, while Keita is a quieter soul who feels the weight of their hidden romance pressing down on him. Every stolen glance and whispered conversation comes with a cost: the fear of being discovered. Keita's insecurity grows as he questions whether he's truly important to Riku, or just a well-kept secret. What Keita doesn't realize is that Riku's caution isn't shame—it's protection. Afraid that coming out could paint a target on Keita's back, Riku struggles with the impossible choice between public honesty and keeping his boyfriend safe. Packed into just 17 minutes, this short film delivers a surprisingly deep emotional punch, exploring the delicate balance between love and societal pressure. With a supportive classmate acting as a stand-in for us viewers (all heart-eyes and nervous glances), Why Do We Have to Hide It?! is a tender, bite-sized drama that proves even the simplest stories can leave a lasting mark.

I am absolutely gone for these two. Riku and Keita have this quiet, gentle chemistry that made my heart flutter from the very first scene. The way Riku looks at Keita when he thinks no one is watching—I melted. Yes, it's only 17 minutes, but those minutes are pure concentrated sweetness with just the right amount of angst. I need a full series immediately! 🥹💕

It's cute, I'll give it that, but let's be honest—the plot is wafer-thin. The 'wannabe girlfriend' cliché felt forced, and the fever scene was oddly placed. For a short film, it tries to do too much in too little time, leaving character motivations underdeveloped. Riku's protective reasoning makes sense, but it's delivered through a single line. Still, it's harmless and the leads are likeable enough.

For an indie short, the visual direction surprised me. The soft lighting in the classroom scenes, the way the camera lingers on their hands almost touching—it's incredibly deliberate and evocative. The color palette leans warm and muted, which perfectly mirrors the bittersweet tone. The only downside is that some shots feel a bit cramped (likely budget constraints), but the overall aesthetic is a solid B+.

I appreciate that this film treats the fear of being outed with genuine sensitivity rather than sensationalism. Riku's motivation—protecting Keita from potential bullying—is a sadly realistic reason for staying closeted. However, I wished the narrative had given Keita more agency in the decision-making process; his insecurity is valid but largely internal. The supportive female classmate is a nice touch, though she sometimes feels like a prop. Overall, a good conversation starter about teen LGBTQ+ relationships in Japan.
