Set against the sun-drenched beaches of Hua Hin, *Water Boyy: The Movie* follows Nam, a naturally gifted but unmotivated swimmer who’d rather party than practice. When his father, the team’s coach, forces him to share a room with the intense and disciplined Meuk, sparks fly. Their initial friction slowly gives way to a tender, unspoken connection as they navigate friendship, jealousy, and the pressure of upcoming competitions. But with Nam’s complicated family dynamics—including his father’s controversial relationship with a much younger man—and Meuk’s lingering ties to his girlfriend, their bond is tested. This intimate, slow-burn Thai BL captures the aching confusion of first love and self-discovery, all wrapped in a hazy, summery aesthetic. A poignant prelude to the series, the film focuses squarely on the emotional push-and-pull between two boys learning what it means to truly see each other.

I absolutely adored the chemistry between Nam and Meuk. They didn't need to kiss—every single longing look spoke volumes. Their slow-burn felt so real, like watching two shy boys fall in love in summer. Yes, the editing is a bit messy, but the feelings are pure gold. I smiled the entire time!

I appreciate the natural acting, but the storytelling is a mess. Scenes jump without clear cause and effect, and characters make baffling decisions. Nam’s dad dating a guy half his age felt more creepy than relevant. I wanted to love this, but poor writing kept pulling me out. The leads deserve a better script.

Visually, this film is a treat. The warm, golden hues and soft lighting give everything a dreamy, nostalgic quality that perfectly matches the seaside setting. Sure, the plot wobbles, but the framing and color palette made me feel like I was flipping through a photo album of a lost summer. A gorgeous piece of early BL cinema.

I appreciate that the main romance is built on genuine friendship and mutual respect, but I have issues with the dad’s subplot—it romanticizes a power-imbalanced relationship with a much younger man. Also, Meuk’s girlfriend is written as a one-dimensional obstacle, which feels lazy. Still, the leads' dynamic is refreshingly non-toxic for its time.
