Set against the tumultuous backdrop of the Han Dynasty, *W: King* reimagines history through a tragic, time-spanning romance between Emperor Liu Che and Mao Dun Jun, a Xiongnu prince once held hostage at the imperial court. In their past life, Mao Dun Jun’s love for Liu Che was eclipsed by political betrayal, ultimately leading to the fall of his people. Now, reincarnated in the present, they are pulled together by fate—and torn apart by the weight of ancient grudges. This vertical short-form series packs epic scope into 42 tightly paced episodes, blending sword-clashing action with raw emotional confrontations. Expect intense chemistry, a side couple that steals scenes, and a storyline that dares to ask whether love can survive the cycle of vengeance. While the narrative can be choppy and the ending ambiguous, the series’ bold historical fantasy and unflinching romance make it a uniquely daring watch for BL fans craving something different.

I came for the history and stayed for the chemistry. The side couple is honestly my favorite part—they have this toxic, redemptive vibe that reminded me of VegasPete. The main leads also deliver on the angst and the kisses are actually real, which is rare. Pacing is messy but the visuals are stunning for a vertical drama.

I wanted to love this because the concept is so unique, but the execution is all over the place. The reincarnation timeline jumps so fast I lost track of who was who. The ending is genuinely confusing—did they reunite in the afterlife or not? Great effort, but it needs a tighter script.

I am utterly obsessed with Liu Che and Mao Dun Jun. The way they look at each other—pure torture and love. The short episodes mean I binged it in one night, and I don't care that the plot is confusing. The kissing scenes made me scream. If you want epic, tragic love, this is it.

Filmed vertically but surprisingly cinematic. The Han Dynasty costumes are rich, the color grading leans into dark golds and deep reds, and the action choreography has weight. Not every scene lands, but when it hits, it's gorgeous. The side couple's aesthetic alone is worth the watch.

I appreciate the attempt at a historical BL with power imbalances, but the drama doesn't interrogate the non-consensual elements enough. There's captivity, torture, and manipulation played as romantic angst. The leads have chemistry, but the framing of the Xiongnu prince's subjugation made me uncomfortable. Not for everyone.
