In the suffocating darkness of a post-war Vietnamese coal mine, two young miners, Viet and Nam, find a fragile sanctuary in each other’s arms. Haunted by the ghosts of a war that claimed Nam’s father and dreaming of an escape from a life of backbreaking labor, they share stolen moments of tenderness that blur the line between reality and fantasy. Director Truong Minh Quý masterfully weaves a nonlinear narrative, shifting between the intimate present of the lovers and the ghostly search for war martyrs buried beneath the earth. As they grapple with the weight of history and societal oppression, Viet and Nam must decide whether to flee their homeland together. Exquisitely shot with a hypnotic, dreamlike pace, 'Viet and Nam' is a raw, poetic meditation on queer love, memory, and survival—a film that lingers long after the final frame.

I was completely swept away by the raw, tender chemistry between Viet and Nam. Their stolen moments in the mine felt so real and heartbreaking. This film is not your typical BL fluff—it's a deep, emotional journey that left me in tears. A masterpiece of queer cinema.

I appreciate the artistic ambition, but the nonlinear narrative felt too meandering for my taste. The ending seemed like a cop-out, and I wanted more concrete development of the characters' escape plan. Still, the cinematography is undeniably gorgeous.

Every shot in Viêt and Nam is a visual poem. The use of natural light in the dark mining tunnels and the dreamy underwater sequences are breathtaking. I watched this primarily for the composition, and I was not disappointed. A feast for the eyes.

The film does important work in depicting queer love under the shadow of war and state oppression. However, the power dynamics between the characters and the lack of explicit consent conversations (though implied through tenderness) left me wanting a bit more nuance. Still, a vital story that needs to be told.

The sound design and sparse score in this film are incredible. The ambient noise of the mine, the silence between breaths—it all builds an atmosphere of tension and longing. The few musical cues are perfectly placed to amplify the emotion. I listened to the soundtrack on repeat for days.
