For fans of the original series, this special cinematic re-edit of 'Utsukushii Kare' is a transformative experience. Stripped of episodic flashbacks and replaced with a flowing, movie-like narrative, the film dives deeper into the raw, unfiltered emotions of Hira and Kiyoi. From their first tumultuous meeting in high school to their reunion in college, every glance and whispered word carries new weight. Extended scenes—like Kiyoi's vulnerable glance back after a loss, or the quiet tension of shared spaces—reveal a mutual longing that the series only hinted at. With revamped ambient sound design and a more intimate focus on the characters' inner lives, this version amplifies the story's haunting beauty and obsessive love. Whether you're a returning fan or a newcomer, this is the definitive way to experience one of Japanese BL's most achingly realistic romances.

I cried so much. Seeing Hira and Kiyoi's love unfold on the big screen with no interruptions was everything. The new extended glances made my heart flutter—Kiyoi is so obviously smitten from the start! This version made me love them even more. If you're a hopeless romantic, don't miss it.

The ambient sound design in this special edit is a game-changer. Kiyoi's theme booming in surround sound gave me chills. They removed the distracting outro music from crucial scenes, and the silence or water sounds amplified every emotion. I'd watch it again just for the audio experience.

As someone who adores the novels, I appreciate how this edit restores some of Kiyoi's subtle obsessive traits that the series downplayed. The extended scenes hint at his side of the story better. Still, I wish they kept the whole 'Hira moving to his cousin's' subplot. But overall, a worthy companion piece.

I get why fans love this, but the pacing still drags in parts—especially the middle college section. The new scenes are nice but don't add much plot-wise. The film relies heavily on brooding stares and inner monologues. Beautifully shot, but I wanted more narrative payoff. Still, it's a solid 7 from me.

Every frame is a painting. The lighting, the way the camera lingers on Kiyoi's face, the muted color palette—this special edit feels like an art film. The removal of flashbacks lets the cinematography breathe. I could watch Hira's silent worship shots on loop. Pure visual poetry.
