Under the Veil is a mesmerizing Hong Kong anthology series that weaves three distinct folklore tales, each peeling back the layers of love, lust, vanity, greed, and selfishness. The first story follows fraternal twins—a brother and sister—who both become entangled with two men who share an uncanny identical appearance, blurring the lines between fate and illusion. Another tale centers on a scholarly man who finds himself drawn to a mysterious prince, their bond tested by supernatural forces and societal expectations. With a blend of historical charm, dark fantasy, and sharp comedy, the series uses each fable to explore the consequences of unchecked desire. What makes it special is its fearless portrayal of gay romance within a traditional setting, wrapped in visually rich storytelling that feels both timeless and provocative. Expect twists, poignant moments, and a haunting look at what people sacrifice for love and power.

I went in for the folklore and stayed for the heartbreaking love story between the scholar and the prince. Their chemistry felt so genuine, even with the limited screen time. The twin storyline was also beautiful—seeing two people fall for mirrored faces was haunting. Not perfect, but the romance alone made it worth my weekend binge.

The ideas are interesting but the execution falls short. Each story feels rushed—especially the third one, which tries to cram too many twists into two episodes. The gay romance is groundbreaking for its time, but the writing relies on coincidences and melodrama. Worth a watch if you love folklore, but don't expect tight plotting.

The visual direction is stunning for a mid-2010s Hong Kong drama. They used natural lighting, rich color palettes, and creative framing to separate the three stories. The dream sequences in the twin arc gave me goosebumps. Sound design could be better, but the costumes and sets are a feast for the eyes.

I appreciate that they dared to show a gay romance in historical Hong Kong, but the power dynamics are uncomfortable. The prince-scholar relationship has a clear imbalance, and the twin storyline includes an extramarital affair that's glamorized. There's no real discussion of consent or agency. A step forward for representation, but not a model for healthy relationships.

The side couple in the second story stole my heart! Their arc was angsty, redemptive, and so beautifully acted. I wish they had gotten more episodes. The main gay romance is sweet, but the side duo's tension and eventual resolution hit me right in the feels. If you love dark, forbidden love, this one's for you.
