On the neon-lit streets of Shibuya, high school student Momose stumbles upon a startling secret: his quiet classmate Yashiro, whom he barely knew, is walking confidently in a dress and makeup. Instead of averting his gaze, Momose becomes transfixed—curious, confused, and undeniably drawn. What follows is an awkward, intense dance of discovery as Momose pursues a baffled and embarrassed Yashiro, who is terrified of being exposed. Momose’s relentless yet clumsy attempts to understand his own feelings—and Yashiro’s hidden world—push both boys to confront their deepest insecurities about gender, desire, and self-acceptance. Adapted from a manga, this 2015 Japanese film is a raw, tender, and polarizing look at first love tangled in societal expectations, cross-dressing, and the messy reality of teenage emotions. With a runtime that packs surprising depth, *Udagawachou de Matteteyo* offers no easy answers, but it dares to ask the painful questions about what it means to love someone––and yourself––in all your complicated glory.

I can't stop thinking about this film! Yashiro is so precious, and Momose's determination to love him despite the chaos—yes, he makes mistakes, but you can feel his heart racing in every scene. The moment he learns to see Yashiro as the same person in boy clothes gave me chills. This is real, messy, beautiful love.

The story is all over the place. Momose goes from being a creepy stalker to a loving boyfriend with zero believable development. The whole blackmail angle is brushed aside too easily. If you want a coherent romance, look elsewhere. The actors tried, but the script let them down.

Visually, this movie is a hidden gem. The Shibuya night scenes are gorgeously lit, and the contrast between Yashiro's feminine and masculine looks is captured with real care. The close-ups during their tense conversations say more than words. I wish more BL films paid this much attention to cinematography.

I appreciate that the film tries to explore genderqueer identity, but the way Momose pressures and sexually assaults Yashiro is NOT romantic. It's coercive and predatory. The attempted rape scene made me sick—no apology later fixes that kind of trauma. We need to stop normalizing this in BL.

The soundtrack surprised me! That indie rock vibe during Momose's headphones scenes really set the mood. I looked up the band GRIEVA after the film—they fit the confused teen angst perfectly. Not every scene had the right musical cue, but when it hit, it really hit.
