A hilarious and heartfelt Thai comedy-drama that dares to ask: what happens when two well-meaning but misguided mothers try to 'fix' their LGBTQ+ children by literally chaining them together in a room? Hang and King are both secretly dating—Hang has a girlfriend, Jeab, and King has a boyfriend—but their mothers, unable to accept their children’s identities, hatch an absurd plan to force them into a heterosexual relationship. What follows is a chaotic, surprisingly touching journey of rebellion, self-discovery, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship. With a lighthearted tone that never shies away from the real pain of homophobia, Tom Gay balances laugh-out-loud comedy with genuine emotional moments. The film’s low-budget charm and earnest performances make it a hidden gem for those seeking an unconventional, queer-positive story wrapped in pure Thai comedic flair.

I went in expecting nothing but cheap laughs, but Tom Gay really surprised me. The scene where the moms realize their plan is backfiring had me in stitches, yet the moment King breaks down talking about his boyfriend almost made me cry. It's messy, low-budget, and the acting is rough around the edges, but the heart is there. A hidden gem for anyone who loves queer stories that don't take themselves too seriously.

I appreciate the attempt at a bold premise, but this film fails to deliver. The character development is nonexistent, the pacing is all over the place, and the ending feels like they just ran out of time. Both relationships are kinda toxic and no one learns anything meaningful. I can see why some people enjoy the chaotic comedy, but as a story it's a mess. Would only recommend if you're a completionist for early Thai BL.

The chaining metaphor is powerful, and I liked how the film shows two different parental reactions—one mother eventually softens while the other stays rigid. That’s a realistic touch. But the movie doesn’t dig deep enough into the psychological harm of this kind of coercion. The comedy undercuts the serious message at times. Still, for 2013, it’s decently progressive. Not a must-watch, but worth a discussion.

Visually, this is a mess. The lighting is flat, the camera work is shaky, and the editing feels rushed. But I actually found that charming in a way—it gives the film a homemade, authentic vibe. The music is forgettable. If you can look past the technical flaws, there’s a fun little story about queer resilience. Not for cinephiles, but for fans of campy indie humor.
