Six men wake up in a dark, abandoned warehouse, mysterious collars locked around their necks. Before they can even process their confusion, a plushie dog named Masao announces it’s an AI on a mission to study the human emotion of *tokimeki* — that racing, fluttering heartbeat. The catch? If their heart rates spike too high, the collars will inject a lethal substance. They have 72 hours to survive this twisted death game, but they can only escape by keeping each other calm — or by making someone else’s heart beat fast enough to die. As tension rises, alliances form, rivalries ignite, and two unlikely souls find their hearts racing for love instead of fear. *Tokimeki Bakudan* is a wild, genre-bending ride that mixes psychological horror, dark comedy, and sweet BL romance into a single, pulse-pounding package.

I went in for the death game but stayed for Kadotani and Maruno. Their love story is so raw — every stolen look could literally kill them, and yet they choose to feel anyway. The ending had me sobbing. This is BL done right, with actual stakes.

The concept is clever, but the execution feels messy. The comedy often undercuts the tension, and some character motivations are paper-thin. Masao the AI dog is cute but overused. I wanted more systematic mind games, less random fluff.

Visually, this series is a treat. The dim warehouse lighting creates a claustrophobic atmosphere, and the way the camera lingers on small gestures — a hand brushing an arm, a nervous swallow — amplifies every heartbeat. The color grading shifts beautifully when emotions peak.

The soundtrack really sells the emotional rollercoaster. The main theme uses a ticking clock and a soft piano melody that switches to frantic synths during panic scenes. One track in episode 4, when Masao sings a lullaby, is both hilarious and haunting.

Interesting as a thought experiment about forced vulnerability, but I found the power dynamics uncomfortable at times. The characters are literally coerced into emotional intimacy or death — not exactly a healthy message. Still, the show does acknowledge the horror of it all, which I appreciate.
