Set in the vibrant, 55-year-old Huannan Market in Taipei’s Monga district, *The Time of Huannan* is a deeply moving Taiwanese film that weaves time travel, family secrets, and first love into a soul-stirring tapestry. In 2022, high school student Chen Yao Hua (Hsia Teng Hung) works at his family’s butcher stall while caring for his increasingly depressed father, Chen Bao Ding. After filming his father’s strange rooftop dance, Yao Hua is mysteriously hurled back to 1991—the year his father was young and the market was alive with the energy of four inseparable friends. Mistaken for a missing classmate, Yao Hua joins the trio: a younger version of his own father (Edison Song), his father’s closeted lover An Jian (Chu Meng Hsuan), and the spirited girl Yu Kang Ming (Wang Yu Ping). As he navigates a time when being gay was far from accepted, Yao Hua discovers the painful love story that shaped his father’s life—and finds himself falling for Yu Kang Ming. More than a simple romance, this film is a heartfelt exploration of how love endures across decades, how understanding the past can heal the present, and how a single moment can echo through a lifetime. With stunning cinematography, a nostalgic 90s atmosphere, and powerhouse performances, it’s a cinematic experience that stays with you long after the credits roll.

I bawled my eyes out. The love story between the young father and An Jian is so raw and beautiful—it broke me. And Yao Hua falling for Kang Ming while trying to understand his dad… it’s just perfection. No kiss needed, the lingering glances said everything.

Visually stunning—the red tones and neon are incredible—but the narrative is a mess. Too many threads (sexual assault, time travel mechanics, multiple love stories) crammed into 2+ hours. It feels like a miniseries chopped into a film. Pacing is off, and some emotional beats don't land.

This film is a visual masterpiece. The way they light the market at night, the slow-mo shots of rain on the roof, the homoerotic bathing scene—every frame is a painting. The 90s costumes and set design are flawless. I could watch it on mute and still be moved.

I appreciate how the film doesn’t shy away from the pain of queer life in 1991 Taiwan—the closet, the assault, the rejection. But the assault disclosure is handled clumsily and feels like it’s only there for shock value. Still, the father-son reconciliation and the message of understanding across generations is powerful and important.

The music is divisive—some songs feel mismatched, but I loved the eclectic mix. The repeated 'Isle of Capri' motif haunts me. Yes, the score is busy, but it captures the chaotic energy of youth and longing. The ending ballad with the epilogue gave me chills.
