The Rain Stories is a Thai anthology film that weaves together three unconventional high-school love stories, each exploring the messy, beautiful, and heartbreaking sides of first love. In the first tale, an overweight disabled boy named Nana harbors a crush on the most popular boy in school, Gent—a relationship that tests the limits of friendship, self-acceptance, and public shame. The second story follows Bas, who discovers that his dying mother's longtime 'aunt' is actually his biological father, a transgender woman; his journey toward understanding collides with his best friend Boy's quiet affection. The final segment introduces Tae, a gambling-addicted student who agrees to sell himself to a wealthy man named Nont, only to find generosity, jealousy, and painful self-realization. Linked by the symbolic motif of rain—falling during moments of vulnerability, confession, and loss—the film refuses to gloss over the flaws of its characters. Instead, it offers a raw, empathetic look at how young people grapple with identity, desire, and the courage to be seen. Expect no easy happy endings, but a poignant meditation on love in all its imperfect forms.

I wanted to love this anthology, but the third story just lost me completely. Tae is so manipulative that the supposed tragic ending felt like poetic justice rather than heartbreak. The first story is the real gem—flawed, real, and uncomfortable in the best way. A mixed bag overall.

I'm a sucker for messy love, and the first story broke my heart. Nana and Gent's dynamic is so painfully realistic—the way Gent hides their friendship then pulls him close when no one's looking? That's real teenage confusion. The other two stories didn't grab me as much, but the rain motif ties everything together beautifully.

This film tries to do a lot with representation, and I appreciate that. The disabled lead is allowed to be selfish and flawed, not just a saint. But the second story about the transgender father felt rushed and leaned on outdated terminology. It's a step forward in some ways, but a step sideways in others.

Visually, this film is stunning. The rain-soaked scenes are drenched in color and emotion—every puddle reflection feels deliberate. The editing between the three stories keeps a steady melancholy rhythm. Even when the plots frustrate me, the cinematography never disappoints. A rainy day gem for lovers of moody visuals.
