Set against the backdrop of a Beijing university, 'The Raccoon' is a tender and unhurried exploration of first love, jealousy, and the quiet courage of self-discovery. The story begins when Gu Xiao An, a shy Chinese Literature student, accidentally steals a blanket on a sweltering night—a simple mistake that entangles him with the bold and charismatic Mao Cai. As Mao Cai playfully pursues Xiao An, calling him 'my wife' in playful whispers, a third presence looms: the gentle roommate Lao Si, who has silently loved Xiao An all along. This delicate love triangle unfolds through rooftop conversations, shy touches, and jealous glances, until a theater performance and a drunken night force hidden feelings into the open. What follows is a raw, achingly honest confession that redefines friendship and desire. Filmed with a dreamlike intimacy and shaped by its origins as a student project, 'The Raccoon' captures the slow, methodical rhythm of Chinese courtship—every hug earned, every kiss devastating. It’s a love story that whispers instead of shouts, leaving you breathless and hoping for more.

I’m completely smitten. The way Mao Cai chases Xiao An with such playful desperation, and that confession on the bleachers? I cried. It’s not about flashy drama—it’s about two people learning to trust each other, and the quiet moments between them are everything. Perfect slow-burn romance.

I wanted to love it, but the pacing drags even for a slice-of-life. The love triangle feels unbalanced—Lao Si barely gets any development. Also, the brotherhood metaphor Mao Cai uses is confusing and never fully resolved. The final confession is beautiful but feels rushed after all that waiting.

Visually stunning for a student project. The rooftop scenes are bathed in golden hour light, and the way the camera lingers on small touches—a hand reaching under a table, a blanket pulled tight—says more than dialogue could. The color grading leans cool and melancholic, perfectly matching the emotional tone. A masterclass in indie cinematography.

I appreciate the film’s honest look at consent in a culture where direct communication is rare. The morning-after scene where Xiao An says 'I don't remember' is complicated—it raises real questions about intoxication and agency. That said, the film handles it with care, and Xiao An’s later joyful chase shows he’s ultimately in control of his choices. Worth discussing.

The music is sparse but effective. There’s a simple piano motif that plays during the rooftop scenes—it’s melancholic and repetitive, almost like a heartbeat. When the happy music finally kicks in during the stadium chase, it’s such a relief. I wish the soundtrack had a bit more variety, but what’s there fits the mood perfectly.
