Best friends since childhood, Phupha and Nanfah have always shared an unbreakable bond, promising never to leave each other’s side. But as they enter university, Phupha’s feelings deepen into a secret crush he’s too afraid to confess, convinced Nanfah could never see him as more than a friend. Misinterpreting Nanfah’s innocent interactions with a female classmate as romantic interest, a heartbroken Phupha makes the devastating decision to break his promise and vanish from Nanfah’s life, leaving only a lie about moving to Australia. Divided into two emotionally charged episodes—one from Phupha’s perspective and one from Nanfah’s—this intimate miniseries explores the raw pain of unrequited love, the agony of silence, and the ten-year search for reconciliation. Based on a true story, it’s a beautifully heartbreaking look at what happens when two people love each other but fail to say the words. Every glance and every shattered pocket watch tells a story of missed chances and a love that refuses to fade.

I am absolutely wrecked. The chemistry between Kun and Kiak is off the charts—every look, every tear, every missed touch felt so real. I cried through both episodes and immediately started watching The Promise. This is what BL should be: raw, honest, and full of love that hurts. The pocket watch symbolism? Devastating. 10/10 would cry again.

The melodrama works in bursts, but the whole 'misunderstanding could be solved in one honest conversation' trope is pushed to its limit. Phupha’s decision to run away feels forced, and the time jumps are choppy. Still, the acting is good enough to carry the weak plot. If you can suspend disbelief about the lack of communication, it’s a decent cry.

Visually, this miniseries is a triumph. The warm, golden lighting of the coffee plantation contrasts beautifully with the cold, blue-toned university scenes. The use of shattered glass and pocket watches as metaphors for broken promises is masterful. Every frame feels intentional. Even if the story is a bit rushed, I could watch these visuals on loop.

Having read the novel (based on real events), I appreciate the emotional core being preserved, but the miniseries condenses too much. The second episode loses Nanfah’s internal turmoil in favor of a more passive search. Also, the changes in backstory between this prequel and the main series are jarring. Watch this as its own standalone cry fest, not as a faithful adaptation.

What strikes me is how this story illustrates the damage that patriarchal expectations of masculinity can cause. Phupha cannot express his love because he assumes it’s unwanted, and Nanfah is socially conditioned not to see his friend’s affections. The lack of communication isn’t just a plot device—it’s a commentary on how we are taught to hide our feelings. The ending’s open bitterness feels earned.
