In *The Past Is Present*, a soul-stirring Filipino BL film, we meet a man trapped in a poignant time loop, reliving the echoes of a past relationship just as the Christmas season envelops his world. As everyone around him hustles toward the future, he remains tethered to memories of an ex-lover whose return during the holidays shatters his fragile routine. Blending a melancholic, nostalgic atmosphere with the warmth of holiday lights, this film explores the painful beauty of letting go and the courage it takes to embrace the present. With stunning performances from Mayumi Layne Villar and Aaron Villar Gerodias, the story unfolds through fragmented flashbacks and raw, intimate moments that blur the line between memory and reality. It’s a visually striking, emotionally charged romance that asks: when the past keeps pulling you back, how do you finally move forward?

I can't stop thinking about this film. The chemistry between the leads is so tender and real that I felt every heartbeat, every tear, every almost-kiss. The time-loop twist made their reunion feel even more precious. If you love second-chance romance that makes you ugly-cry, this is it.

The emotional core is strong, but the time-loop logic is inconsistent. How many loops do we actually see? The pacing drags in the middle, relying too much on montages of longing looks. Still, the leads give it their all, and the Christmas setting is gorgeous.

Visually, this is a masterpiece. Every frame is drenched in warm Christmas lights and soft shadows, making the flashbacks feel dreamlike and the present tense feel claustrophobic. The color palette shifts between gold and blue to mirror the protagonist's emotional state. A treat for the eyes.

I appreciate that the film doesn't glamorize the ex's return—it acknowledges the power imbalance and the emotional toll of being stuck in the past. However, I wanted more explicit conversations about consent and boundaries during the intimate scenes. Still, it's a step forward for Pinoy BL.

The soundtrack is a hidden gem. A haunting piano theme loops subtly in the background, mirroring the protagonist's trapped state. The Christmas carols are used sparingly but effectively—they never feel cheesy. I've already added the score to my playlist.
