Welcome to the first-ever Taiwanese BL rock musical! 'The New Member' is a groundbreaking stage production that captures the raw energy of high school rebellion and first love through electrifying music and heartfelt performances. When An, a brilliant but reserved honor student, defies the wishes of his best friend to join the rock music club just weeks before the national high school band competition, he plunges into a world of loud guitars, messy rehearsals, and unexpected emotions. Amidst the chaos of songwriting and rivalry, An discovers an undeniable connection with the club’s charismatic frontman—a connection that challenges their friendship and forces them both to confront their true feelings. But this isn't just a story of young romance; woven through the rock anthems is a poignant subplot about an older same-sex couple who reflect on the struggles and joys of loving openly in a changing Taiwan. Performed live on stage with a full audience, 'The New Member' is a vibrant, funny, and deeply moving celebration of music, identity, and the courage to be yourself. Whether you're a theater lover or a BL fan looking for something fresh, this musical will leave you humming and believing in the power of a power chord.

As a huge theater fan, I loved that this was a real stage musical with a live audience! The songs are catchy, the set design is clever, and the energy is infectious. Yes, it starts slowly, but the payoff in the second half — especially with the older couple — had me in tears. Highly recommend if you're open to something different.

I came for the young rockers but stayed for the older gay couple. Their storyline is so much richer and more nuanced — it really highlights how far Taiwan has come in terms of LGBTQ+ acceptance. The young romance is cute but formulaic. Still, the musical numbers are fun and the production value is impressive for a stage recording.

I appreciate the ambition, but the first half dragged way too much. There are too many characters introduced at once, and it took me a while to figure out who was who. The fujoshi character felt a bit stereotypical as well. That said, the music is good and the second half redeems the experience. Not for impatient viewers.

This musical is a beautiful celebration of queer love across generations. I loved how the show didn't shy away from the struggles older gay couples faced, while also showing the joyful freedom younger people have today. The live format made it feel intimate and real. A must-watch for anyone who believes in the power of music and representation.
