In a sea of K-BLs that thrive on dramatic misunderstandings and over-the-top angst, *The New Employee* stands out as a gentle, grounded breath of fresh air. This 2022 miniseries follows Woo Seung Hyun (Moon Ji Yong), a late bloomer in his late twenties who finally lands his dream internship at a prestigious advertising agency. On his very first day, a minor mishap puts him face-to-face with the notoriously strict and cold team manager, Kim Jong Chan (Kwon Hyuk). To Seung Hyun's surprise, the intimidating boss is not only highly competent but also quietly, unmistakably gay—and so is he. As Seung Hyun navigates the pressures of office life, he finds himself drawn to Jong Chan's unexpected warmth beneath his professional exterior. What begins as a tentative attraction slowly blossoms into a mature, communicative romance that prioritizes mutual respect and personal growth over contrived drama. Directed by openly gay activist Kim Jho Kwang Soo (known for *Just Friends?*), the series celebrates healthy queer relationships in a workplace setting without any identity crisis or homophobic angst. The emotional core lies in two adults learning to trust each other—both in love and in their careers—while supporting their respective dreams. With short, sweet episodes and a focus on stolen glances, honest conversations, and simple acts of kindness, *The New Employee* proves that sometimes the most powerful love stories are the quietest ones. It’s a heartwarming ode to the beauty of normalcy.

This is exactly what I needed. I'm so tired of BLs that drag out misunderstandings for 16 episodes. Here, two grown-ups actually talk! Seung Hyun and Jong Chan have this quiet, realistic chemistry that made me smile nonstop. The cheek kisses, the hand-holding, the way they support each other's careers—it's pure relationship goals. Not steamy at all, but who cares when the love feels so genuine? A perfect lazy afternoon watch.

I wanted to love this, but it fell flat for me. The pacing is too rushed—7 episodes at 20 minutes each doesn't give the romance room to breathe. Seung Hyun's 'late bloomer' label is barely explored, and the conflict over Jong Chan dating his old crush felt like filler. The leads have decent acting but zero spark. I get why people like the simplicity, but for me it was just boring. There are better office romances out there.

Visually, this is a treat. The opening animation is adorable, and the color grading gives the office a warm, inviting feel. I especially loved the pool scene in episode 6—the soft golden lighting and their reflections made it feel like a painting. Yes, some night scenes are too dark, but overall the cinematography punches above its budget. The director clearly has an eye for intimate framing.

As someone who read the web novel (and the 18+ version), I was prepared for this adaptation to tone things down—and it does. The core relationship is intact, but they cut a lot of character development for the side characters. Yoo Seong felt wasted. That said, Moon Ji Yong and Kwon Hyuk capture the essence of their characters well. The finale is a bit too neat compared to the novel, but it's still a cozy adaptation. Webtoon fans will appreciate it, just don't expect the spicy content.

The soundtrack is... fine. Pleasant, but nothing that sticks with you. I really wanted a memorable OST like *Semantic Error* had, but here the background music is mostly generic soft piano. However, I did like the little guitar riff that plays during their sweet moments—it adds a gentle warmth. It's not a dealbreaker, but I wish the music matched the sincerity of the story.

I appreciate how this show handles power dynamics. Jong Chan is Seung Hyun's direct supervisor, yet the series is careful to show them keeping their relationship professional at work until they leave the company. There's one kiss early on that feels a bit uninitiated, but overall they prioritize consent and communication. The fact that Seung Hyun is openly gay without trauma is huge for Korean media. It's a step forward for BL representation.
