In the lush, mystical highlands of the Philippines, a young man named Diego (Curt Ocampo) returns to his ancestral home by a tranquil lake, only to discover that the waters hold a secret far deeper than folklore. There, he meets Kalani, a mercurial merman (Marky Erasga) who is both the guardian and the prisoner of the lake. Their worlds collide in a tender, forbidden romance that blurs the line between myth and reality. As Diego and Kalani navigate the fragile boundaries of trust and identity, they realize their love is not just a personal bond—it’s the very force that keeps the lake alive. This six-episode Filipino miniseries weaves supernatural wonder with intimate human emotion, offering a visually stunning, heartfelt journey that asks: can love truly conquer the barriers between land and sea?

I am absolutely living for Diego and Kalani! Their chemistry is so natural and pure, and every scene between them made my heart flutter. The way Kalani looks at Diego like he’s the entire ocean—please, someone give me a fishing rod because I’m hooked. This is the magical BL I never knew I needed.

The premise is charming and the lead actors do their best, but the pacing feels rushed in places—especially the mid-series conflict. Some mythological rules are introduced then ignored. Still, for a low-budget mini-series, it tells a coherent love story that doesn’t overstay its welcome. A solid, if slightly undercooked, watch.

Visually, this series is a hidden gem. The underwater scenes are shot with ethereal lighting, and the lake landscape is captured with such reverence that it becomes a character itself. The costuming for Kalani—woven fabric, shells, subtle blue hues—feels inspired by Filipino folklore. Not every indie BL looks this beautiful.

I appreciated how the show handles consent and emotional boundaries between a human and a mythical being. Kalani isn’t just a fantasy; he’s a being with agency, and Diego’s respect for his autonomy is refreshing. The series quietly challenges colonial narratives about nature spirits and centers indigenous perspectives on guardianship—a thoughtful layer beneath the romance.

The soundtrack is what really sold me. The gentle acoustic guitar and soft vocals in the main theme perfectly mirror the calm yet longing tone of the series. There’s a particular instrumental piece that plays during their first underwater encounter—it gave me chills. I’ve already added it to my playlist for when I need a magical escape.
