In the tangled web of unrequited love, Song Chen Yue has harbored a secret crush on his best friend Su Yi since high school. But Su Yi's heart belongs to the charming Bai Yu, setting off a chain of longing, jealousy, and self-destruction. When the trio gets pulled into a mysterious virtual reality game, reality and fantasy blur, forcing Song Chen Yue to confront his feelings in ways he never imagined. This 2016 Chinese film masterfully weaves flashbacks, dreamlike sequences, and a sci-fi twist into a raw exploration of obsessive love and the painful journey toward self-acceptance. Far from the typical tragic BL, *Fanatic Love* delivers a surprisingly gentle, hopeful ending that will leave you emotionally wrecked—in the best way. With a small but passionate cast led by Yang Huang Yin and Li Qing Ke, it's a hidden gem for those craving a thoughtful, character-driven romance with an unconventional narrative structure.

I went in expecting the usual Chinese BL heartbreak, but this movie surprised me with its softness. Song Chen Yue's devotion broke my heart, and the ending made me cry happy tears for once. The virtual reality element felt fresh and never overshadowed the love story. Li Qing Ke was adorable—already rewatching!

The concept is interesting but the execution is a mess. Jumping between timelines, dreams, and the VR game made my head spin. I had to rewatch to piece together what actually happened. The chemistry between leads is decent, but the choppy editing kills the momentum. Ending felt rushed and not entirely earned.

I appreciate that the ending is not tragic, but I cannot ignore the problematic dynamics: manipulation, a non-con scene that's later reframed as romantic, and the glorification of obsessive love. The film tries to have it both ways—acknowledging the darkness but also romanticizing it. Not suitable for viewers sensitive to consent issues.

I loved the visual contrast between the hazy, warm high school flashbacks and the colder, more surreal VR sequences. The color grading effectively separates the two worlds. However, the camera felt jerky during some transitions, and the overall editing was too abrupt. A little polish would elevate this to a 9 for me.
