The Extra takes you behind the glittering facade of Thailand's entertainment industry, following Pavin, a hopeful extra (or 'calafare') struggling to make ends meet while chasing his acting dreams. His world collides with Joey, a popular young actor grappling with the pressure of fame and his own hidden desires. As their paths cross on set, a tentative friendship blossoms into something deeper, forcing both men to confront the harsh realities of homophobia within their conservative society and the entertainment business. The series weaves together the gritty, unglamorous life of background performers with the high-stakes world of producers and directors, offering a rare, thoughtful look at what it truly means to be seen. At its heart, The Extra is a tender, achingly honest romance about two people finding courage in each other amid prejudice, set against a backdrop of industry politics and personal sacrifice.

I only watched the BL cut of Pavin's story, and honestly, the social commentary was the strongest part—it actually made me think. But beyond that, there's barely a plot. The sweet moments felt forced and boring, and I couldn't stand Joey's self-centered attitude for most of the show. The ending was a letdown too. Not rewatchable.

This series deserves credit for honestly depicting the daily microaggressions and systemic prejudice that LGBTQ+ people face, especially in the entertainment industry. Pavin's frustrations felt painfully real, and the contrast with Joey's more privileged position added nuance. The romance wasn't perfect, but the message about visibility and self-acceptance made it worth my time.

I'm a sucker for slow-burn, emotional romances, and The Extra delivered exactly what I needed. Pavin and Joey's chemistry felt so natural—I loved watching them grow from awkward coworkers to something more. Yes, the homophobia plot was heavy, but it made their small victories even sweeter. The last few episodes had me smiling through tears. Underrated gem!

The show has a very grounded, documentary-like feel which fits the behind-the-scenes setting. I appreciated the natural lighting and handheld camera work—it made the industry scenes feel authentic. But the color palette was a bit drab and the editing sometimes choppy. Not a visual standout, but solid for a low-budget Thai series from 2016.
