When troublemaker Eli is caught breaking into his international high school, he expects suspension—not dance lessons. His punishment: join the school’s dance troupe under the supervision of Nikko, the openly gay, relentlessly positive student council president who seems to have life figured out. Their constant bickering soon gives way to an unexpected connection, with Eli falling hard for the ‘nerdy’ boy who challenges his every assumption. But just as their romance begins to bloom, a devastating diagnosis threatens to shatter everything. Balancing heartfelt humor, a love triangle with Nikko’s best friend Justin, and a courageous battle against ALS, *The Day I Loved You* is a Filipino BL that dares to ask what it means to love fiercely when time is running out. With bright, whimsical animations and a cast that pours their soul into every scene, this series captures the joy and pain of first love in a way that lingers long after the final episode.

I went in expecting a cute high school BL and got so much more. Nikko and Eli have the kind of chemistry that makes your heart ache in the best way. Tommy Alejandrino is an absolute star—his smile lights up every scene. The first half is pure fluff perfection, and even when things get heartbreaking, the love between them feels so real. I cried, I laughed, and I immediately rewatched the prom episode. A must-watch for any hopeless romantic!

For a low-budget web series, the visual direction is surprisingly strong. The color palette shifts beautifully from warm, golden tones in the first half to cooler, muted shades as the story darkens. The animated doodles and emojis could have been cheesy, but they actually add a whimsical, almost graphic-novel feel. Lighting in the dance scenes is gorgeous—especially the home prom sequence. The cinematography isn't perfect, but it shows real ambition.

I appreciate the attempt at a serious story, but the execution has major issues. The ALS portrayal is medically inaccurate—fainting, sudden leg paralysis—it's clear they didn't do enough research. The tonal whiplash from fluffy rom-com to terminal illness melodrama feels jarring, not earned. Plus the dialogue gets preachy in the second half, with characters spouting inspirational quotes like a greeting card. The cast gives it their all, but the writing lets them down. Not terrible, but far from the masterpiece some claim.

I appreciate that this series shows a gay lead who is confident and out without being a stereotype, and the romantic progression feels consensual and sweet. However, I'm uneasy about how Nikko's illness is used as a catalyst for character growth—the 'inspiration porn' trope is real. The show never really lets Nikko be angry or scared; he's always this saintly figure teaching others about life. That feels like a missed opportunity for a more honest representation of living with a terminal condition. Still, the positive queer representation in a high school setting is valuable.

The soundtrack is a hidden gem! Both the original score and the licensed songs perfectly amplify the emotional beats. The soft piano themes during Nikko and Eli's tender moments, and the uplifting track that plays during the prom dance—I immediately looked them up. The music never overpowers the scenes; instead it wraps around you like a warm blanket. Even the simple guitar strums in the background add so much warmth. A great BL soundtrack that deserves more recognition.
