In a quiet Taiwanese village, two inseparable best friends, Yan Ming and Shao An, navigate the thorny path from childhood to adolescence. They are opposites—Yan Ming is gentle and introspective, while Shao An is bold and protective—but their bond feels unbreakable. As Shao An begins to pursue a classmate, Yu Xuan, Yan Ming is forced to confront an unsettling truth: his feelings for his friend run deeper than friendship. Caught in a painful love triangle, Yan Ming’s jealousy leads to a reckless prank that shatters their trust. His eventual confession of his secret love triggers a devastating fallout, amplified by the cruel bullying he faces at school and the neglect he endures at home. Set against lush rural landscapes and claustrophobic interiors, this 25-minute short film captures the raw agony of first love, the weight of societal prejudice, and the aching loneliness of growing up different. With minimal dialogue and maximum emotional impact, 'The Confession' is a poignant, visually striking portrait of a boy forced to grow up too fast.

I watched this with my heart in my throat. The silent longing in Yan Ming's eyes when he watches Shao An laugh with that girl—it broke me. The bike ride scene was so pure and tragic at the same time. Yes, it's short, but that confession scene wrecked me for days. If you love painful, beautiful first love stories, this is it.

I get the appeal, but the story felt rushed. The love triangle setup is clichéd, and Shao An's sudden coldness after the confession lacked buildup. For a 25-minute film, too much time was spent on scenic shots instead of developing the characters' motivations. The bullying subplot also felt tacked on. Decent for a student project, but not groundbreaking.

Visually, this is a masterpiece. The way the director uses the golden hour to light Yan Ming's happiest moments and then switches to cold, blue-tinted interiors during his isolation—sheer brilliance. Every frame could be a photograph. The mirror scene where he paints his face? Gut-punch of color and emotion. This is how you tell a story with images, not words.

I appreciate the film's honest portrayal of a gay teenager's internalized homophobia and the societal pressures that silence him. However, I wish it had also shown some positive queer representation—every adult is either violent or absent. The 'confession' is framed as something shameful, and that messaging, while realistic, could be heavy for younger viewers. Still, important for sparking conversations about bullying and acceptance.

I found the film deeply moving in its depiction of adolescent sensuality and the agony of unrequited love. The natural landscapes beautifully contrast the suffocating home lives. Yan Ming's pain is palpable, but the film's approach to tolerance is too vague—the adults are merely catalysts for misery. Still, for a short, it packs an emotional punch that stays with you.
