Prepare for an emotional rollercoaster with *TharnType*, the 2019 Thai BL that became a cultural phenomenon for its raw, unflinching portrayal of love born from hatred. The story centers on Type Thiwat (Gulf Kanawut), a hot-tempered engineering freshman whose world revolves around soccer, spicy food, and an intense, almost visceral hatred for gay men. This deep-seated homophobia stems from a traumatic childhood event that left him scarred. His carefully constructed life shatters when he's assigned to share a dorm room with Tharn Kirigun (Mew Suppasit), a charismatic and openly gay senior who is confident, kind, and utterly unapologetic about his sexuality. The clash is immediate and explosive: Type launches a campaign of verbal abuse, physical aggression, and petty harassment to drive Tharn out, while Tharn, instead of retaliating, responds with an unnerving patience and a disturbing tendency to invade Type's personal space. What begins as a war of attrition slowly evolves into something far more complex. Tharn's unwavering presence and unexpected moments of tenderness begin to crack Type's defenses, forcing him to confront not only his prejudice but also the buried trauma that fuels it. As they navigate jealousy, misunderstandings, and a circle of friends with their own secrets, Tharn and Type are drawn into a volatile, addictive connection that blurs the lines between hate and desire. *TharnType* is celebrated for its explosive chemistry and its willingness to tackle difficult themes—homophobia, trauma, and the messy, often ugly process of healing. However, it's also a deeply polarizing series, criticized by many for romanticizing dubious consent and mishandling sensitive subject matter. Whether you're drawn by the legendary on-screen heat of Mew and Gulf or the promise of an enemies-to-lovers story that pulls no punches, this series demands a strong stomach and an open mind. It is a landmark show that defined an era of Thai BL, for better or worse.

I don't care what the haters say—TharnType is the most addictive BL I've ever watched. Mew and Gulf's chemistry is absolutely insane. Every time Tharn looks at Type with those puppy eyes, I melt. Yes, the story is messy, but that's what makes it real. The way they go from hating each other to being unable to keep their hands off each other? Perfection. The ice cube scene in the finale lives rent-free in my head. If you want a drama that makes you feel ALL the emotions, this is it. I've rewatched it four times already.

I can see why people enjoy the surface-level passion, but as a story, TharnType is a mess. The timeline is confusing, Type's trauma is magically cured by a blowjob, and Tharn's 'love' for Type makes no sense—he just thinks he's hot? The side plot with Lhong is laughably predictable, and the resolution (no jail for attempted murder?) is insulting. The acting is decent, but the writing is amateurish. If you need logical character progression, look elsewhere.

I'm genuinely disturbed by how this show romanticizes sexual assault. Tharn kisses Type while he's asleep, gives him hickeys without consent, and the narrative treats it as 'cute revenge.' As someone who works in trauma support, seeing Type's childhood rape used as a plot device to justify toxic behavior is infuriating. The message seems to be that if you're hot enough, boundaries don't matter. This is irresponsible storytelling that harms real LGBTQ+ people. Please watch something else—there are plenty of BLs that handle consent and trauma with respect.

I'm rating this mostly for the music. Mew Suppasit's OST 'Hold Me Tight' is gorgeous and perfectly captures the longing in the story. The instrumental tracks during the emotional scenes really elevate the mood. That said, the drama itself is a mixed bag—I love the hot scenes but cringe at the dialogue. I keep the playlist on repeat, but I skip half the episodes on rewatch.

As someone who read the novel first, I have mixed feelings. The drama captures the core dynamic but cuts out a lot of necessary character development. In the book, Tharn's internal reasoning is clearer—he's also dealing with past abuse. The show rushes through Type's growth, making it seem like he just flips a switch. The casting is perfect though—Mew and Gulf embody Tharn and Type exactly as I imagined. If you haven't read the novel, you'll probably enjoy the drama more; if you have, you'll be frustrated by what's missing.

Visually, this show is a mixed bag. Some scenes have gorgeous lighting—especially the dorm room at night and the rooftop conversations. But the color grading is inconsistent, and the director relies too much on close-ups of the actors' faces instead of showing us the environment. The infamous shower scene is well-shot from a technical standpoint, but the context makes it hard to appreciate. Overall, it's competent but not groundbreaking cinematography. I wish the crew had spent as much effort on the visuals as they did on the sex scenes.

I came for the drama and stayed for... nothing. The fight scenes are pathetic: Type slaps Tharn like a cartoon character, and the big confrontation with Lhong is just people yelling. Where's the actual tension? The physical violence is either played for laughs or treated as 'passion.' If you want a BL with real stakes and well-choreographed action, check out 'KinnPorsche' instead. This is just toxic soap opera with zero payoff.

I honestly watched this for Techno and the few glimpses of Pete/Ae from Love By Chance. The main couple is way too exhausting—Tharn is a creep and Type is a walking red flag. But Techno (Mild) steals every scene he's in with his chaotic energy. I wish the show had given him his own storyline instead of just being Type's cheerleader. Also, the Tar/Tum subplot is creepy and unnecessary. Overall, a frustrating watch that could have been great with better editing.
