Taxi Stories is a poignant triptych of love and longing set across three Asian cities, weaving together the lives of characters searching for connection in a world of secrets. In Beijing, a closeted gay taxi driver risks everything to seduce a wealthy passenger, blurring the lines between transaction and genuine desire. In Hong Kong, a pregnant trophy wife finds herself unexpectedly drawn to her new Indonesian maid, awakening emotions she never dared explore. And in Jakarta, a young slum orphan becomes infatuated with a Westerner, chasing a dream of escape and belonging. Each story explores the raw, messy beauty of love against societal pressures, class divides, and cultural boundaries. Directed with sensitivity, this 2017 Hong Kong indie film celebrates LGBTQ+ love in all its forms—tender, complicated, and defiantly human. It's a quiet, emotional ride that lingers long after the credits roll.

I absolutely adored the Hong Kong maid-trophy wife storyline. The quiet glances and gentle touches between them felt so real—it made my heart ache. Even though the other stories were slower, this one alone is worth the watch. Beautiful queer representation that doesn't feel exploitative.

I wanted to love this, but the three stories barely connect and each feels rushed. The Beijing taxi driver plot had potential but resolved too neatly. The Jakarta orphan arc was confusing and felt like an afterthought. A noble effort that needed tighter writing.

Visually stunning. The way the film uses color palettes—cold blues for Beijing, warm oranges for Jakarta—perfectly mirrors the emotional isolation of each character. Some shots are like paintings. The story may be uneven, but the cinematography alone elevates it.

The film bravely tackles difficult power dynamics—class, race, and closeted shame—but I wish it had handled consent more clearly in the cab driver's story. The seduction felt manipulative, and the resolution glossed over that. Still, the maid storyline beautifully explores mutual respect and slow trust.

The soundtrack is a hidden gem—whispery indie tracks that perfectly underscore the loneliness of each city. I've been replaying the piano piece from the Jakarta segment for weeks. Music carries the emotion when dialogue falls short.
