In this poignant Japanese drama, Tamaki volunteers to become a surrogate mother for her gay older brother, Satoshi, and his partner, Keito. Using her own egg and Keito's sperm, she carries their child, hoping to help the couple build the family they've always dreamed of. But this heartfelt plan stirs deep emotional and societal tensions, from their conservative mother's disapproval to the weight of Japan's strict surrogacy laws. As Tamaki navigates her changing body and complex feelings, the film delicately explores the meaning of parenthood, selfless love, and breaking free from traditional gender roles. Short yet impactful, *Surrogacy* is a rare, sincere look at LGBTQ+ family building in Japan.

I really wanted to love this more, but the execution felt a bit choppy. Still, I appreciate how honestly it addresses surrogacy, homophobia, and misogyny in Japan. Tamaki's journey to reclaim her own agency while helping her brother is beautifully nuanced. It's a necessary conversation starter.

The love between Satoshi and Keito melts my heart! Even though they don't get many intimate scenes, you can feel their devotion. And Tamaki is such a selfless angel. I cried when she held the baby for the first time. This is what BL should be about – real, messy, beautiful family love.

I wanted to like it, but the pacing was all over the place. Scenes jump from one to another without a smooth flow, and some of the acting feels stiff. The theme is fantastic, but it needed a longer runtime to fully develop the characters and relationships. A good idea that didn't fully land.

The cinematography is simple but effective – warm tones and intimate close-ups during the emotional scenes. I loved how the director used space to show Tamaki's isolation. The visual storytelling is stronger than the dialogue at times. Not perfect, but worth a watch for its humane visual approach.

The piano score in the hospital scenes really tugged at my heartstrings. The music isn't overpowering, but it complements the emotional beats perfectly. I wish there was an official OST release – I'd listen to it while reading. A quiet, moving film with a gentle soundtrack.
