Set against the hazy, sun-drenched backdrop of a Taiwanese summer, *Summer of Farewell* is a tender and visually stunning short film that dives deep into the unspoken language of longing. Yen, a quiet and determined young man, attends his final swimming lesson at the local pool. His coach, Shuan, is a disciplined but gentle figure whose presence has become the anchor of Yen's world. Through a series of quiet, ripple-filled moments—shared glances across the water, the electric brush of fingertips during a stroke correction—their bond deepens beyond the typical coach-coachee dynamic. This is not a story of grand confessions or dramatic conflict. Instead, it captures the ache of an imminent goodbye and the profound intimacy that blooms in the space between words. Director Chu Yu-wei masterfully uses water as both a literal and emotional medium, where every lap and every breath becomes a metaphor for connection and release. With no dialogue beyond necessary exchanges, the film relies on potent visual storytelling and a hauntingly sparse piano score. *Summer of Farewell* is a melancholic, beautiful meditation on the pain of parting and the indelible mark a brief encounter can leave on the heart.

I was completely immersed in the visual language of this short film. The way the director uses water reflections, blurred focus, and the contrast of bright summer light against the cool blue pool is nothing short of breathtaking. Every frame could be a photograph. The lack of dialogue only amplifies the power of what we see. A masterclass in showing, not telling.

This destroyed me in the best way possible. The chemistry between Yen and Shuan is so palpable it hurts—I was holding my breath every time they touched. That final moment in the water? I cried for ten minutes. It's so rare to see a coach-coachee relationship handled with this much tenderness and respect. Absolutely beautiful.

While I appreciate the artistic ambition, the pacing felt a little too slow for me. I wanted a bit more backstory to understand why Yen's attachment runs so deep. The emotional payoff relies heavily on the viewer filling in the gaps. That said, the acting is honest and the ending is genuinely moving. It's a solid short, just not a perfect narrative.

I was initially wary of the coach-coachee dynamic, but this film treats it with remarkable care. There's no power abuse—every moment of closeness feels earned and mutual. The subtle nods to consent (the hesitation before a hug, the silent question in a gaze) are refreshing. It's a great example of how to portray an age-gap romance responsibly without losing the magic.

The piano score in this short film is an absolute revelation. It carries every emotional beat with such delicate precision—I immediately looked for a soundtrack release. The way the music swells when they're underwater, then falls into silence when they break the surface… pure genius. The sound design (the splashes, the echoing pool hall) is equally immersive.
