James is a passionate indie film fan who stumbles into the chaotic world of two brash, neophyte gay filmmakers. They boldly claim they are crafting the best gay indie film ever, and James, a firm believer in Cris Pablo's digital filmmaking revolution, volunteers to help. As he becomes deeply involved in their ambitious project, James finds himself caught between his admiration for raw, authentic storytelling and the messy realities of low-budget production. The lines between fiction and reality blur when James starts to develop unexpected feelings for one of the filmmakers, forcing him to confront his own desires and the true meaning of artistic integrity. Set against the gritty, vibrant backdrop of Manila's indie film scene, *Subok* is a heartfelt and unpolished romance that explores love, ambition, and the sacrifices made in pursuit of a dream. This Filipino gem captures the raw, DIY spirit of early gay cinema, offering a tender yet realistic glimpse into queer life and creativity in the Philippines.

I went in expecting a rough indie film, but the chemistry between James and the filmmaker really got me. It's not polished or perfect, but that awkward, real feeling of falling for someone while making art together—I lived for it. The ending broke my heart a little, but in a good way.

I understand the historical value, but the pacing is messy and the dialogue feels improvised in a way that doesn't always land. The central romance lacks enough development to make me root for them. For a film that talks so much about making a great movie, it doesn't practice what it preaches.

As a piece of queer Filipino history, this film is important. It shows gay men just trying to create and love without tragedy porn. But I was uncomfortable with how some characters treated each other—there's a casual cruelty that isn't fully addressed. Still, I'm glad it exists for representation's sake.

I really wanted to love the music, but the soundtrack is barely there—mostly diegetic sounds and occasional guitar strums. It fits the indie vibe, but I felt the emotional scenes could have been elevated with a stronger score. The one original song near the end is nice, but too little too late.
