In this raw and unflinching Hong Kong indie film, Lim's life is shattered by a rare cancer diagnosis that forces him to travel to Switzerland for a risky, life-saving surgery. While recovering at his brother's home, he rekindles a passionate affair with an old flame, seeking solace in fleeting intimacy. But what should be a time of healing becomes a devastating unraveling: Lim's brother abandons him for his own pleasures, and his lover betrays him after the operation fails. 'Stoma' is not a typical romance—it's a brutally honest, artistic exploration of illness, desire, and the cruel indifference of those who claim to love us. The film strips away sentimentality to reveal the raw, often ugly reality of facing cancer without a support system, all while navigating a body and identity that society stigmatizes. With unflinching nudity, emotionally charged performances, and a haunting visual style, this 2020 drama demands a mature audience willing to sit with discomfort and beauty in equal measure.

I went in hoping for a poignant romance, but this is a trauma simulation. There's zero warmth—just one betrayal after another. Lim's suffering is relentless, and the constant nudity felt exploitative rather than artistic. I finished it out of obligation, not enjoyment.

The core idea about stomas in the gay community is important, but the script dumps every possible problem on Lim without giving him a single supportive character. The brother is cartoonishly cruel, and the lover is just a walking red flag. It's a muddled mess that could have been powerful with focus.

Visually, this film is stunning. The Swiss landscapes contrast painfully with the cramped, sterile hospital rooms. The unflinching camera work during intimate scenes—both sexual and medical—made me feel Lim's vulnerability. Yes, the narrative is bleak, but the cinematography gives it a haunting beauty.

As a social critique, 'Stoma' is brave. It shows how queer bodies are commodified and abandoned when they become 'imperfect'. The film forces us to ask why Lim's worth is tied to his sexual availability. It's uncomfortable, but necessary viewing for anyone thinking about disability and desire.

The sparse, melancholic soundtrack perfectly underscores the loneliness. There's a recurring piano motif that plays during Lim's most vulnerable moments, and it haunted me for days. The music doesn't try to manipulate emotion—it simply amplifies the silence between people.
