Picking up where the 2023 series left off, *Stay by My Side Special* is the heartfelt coda fans have been craving. Jiang Chi and Bu Xia escape for a vacation, hoping to leave behind the supernatural chaos that has defined their relationship. But old habits—and ghosts—die hard. As Jiang Chi now bears the burden of hearing spirits instead of Bu Xia, their romantic getaway becomes a test of trust, communication, and growth. Through tender moments and playful bickering, both young men confront their deepest fears: Bu Xia must learn to stand on his own after a lifetime of being protected, while Jiang Chi wrestles with his self-sacrificing nature and dreams of building a stable future for them. The special wraps up lingering questions from the series—answering whether their love can survive graduation, family pressure, and spectral interference—all while delivering the sweet, flirtatious chemistry that made the original a fan favorite. A perfect epilogue that balances supernatural whimsy with genuine emotional maturity.

I'm sobbing happy tears. This special gave me everything I wanted—more kisses, more sweet bickering, and a real ending where both boys grow up without losing their goofy charm. Jiang Chi carrying Bu Xia's bags while grumbling? Peak romance. Absolutely perfect for anyone who loved the original series.

I appreciate the closure, but the special leans too heavily on the same miscommunication trope that bogged down the main series. The new supporting characters feel shoehorned in, and the camerawork is shaky in a few action-adjacent scenes. Still, the emotional beats land where it counts, and the final ten minutes are genuinely moving. A decent epilogue, not a masterpiece.

The vacation setting is a visual treat—soft golden-hour lighting, pastel interiors, and those wide shots of the countryside make every frame feel like a postcard. The color grading shifts beautifully from the series' colder tones to warmer hues, mirroring the characters' emotional thaw. A small budget with big aesthetic heart.

Hong Wei Zhe performing 'Newton and Apple' with Isaac Yang was the vocal hug I didn't know I needed. The soundtrack perfectly mirrors the mood—soft guitar during their quiet moments, a playful synth beat when they tease each other. The closing theme by Eason Lee ('Answer If You Hear') still gives me chills. Music elevates every scene.

I appreciate how this special tackles Bu Xia's journey from being coddled to actively wanting to shoulder responsibility—it's a subtle but important commentary on dependency in relationships. Jiang Chi's nurturing side is portrayed without becoming overbearing, and their communication improves significantly from the series. A sweet, healthy relationship model wrapped in a supernatural bow.
