Set against the haunting backdrop of the 2022 wildfire that ravaged Donghae City, *Solastalgia* follows a group of film students as they travel to Gangwon Province to shoot a documentary for their graduation project. While documenting the devastated landscape, aspiring director Kang Min-jae (Leesong Hee Il) finds himself drawn to the quiet, observant cinematographer Yoon Seo-joon (Park Kyung Bok). Their shared mission to capture the raw grief and fragile resilience of the displaced community slowly reveals a deeper, unspoken connection. As the camera rolls, secrets buried under ash and smoke begin to surface—including a hidden crush that threatens to rewrite the script of their lives. Blending the melancholy of ecological loss with the tender ache of a first love, this Korean BL film explores how destruction can sometimes clear the way for something new to grow. With striking visuals and a slow-burn romance that mirrors the smoldering embers of a forest, *Solastalgia* is a poignant meditation on grief, art, and the courage to say the words you’ve been filming all along.

The cinematography in *Solastalgia* is stunning—every shot of charred trees and smoky skies feels like a painting. I watched it twice just to catch the lighting details. The romance is subtle but beautifully framed, though I wish the storytelling had a bit more momentum.

I'm a sucker for a slow burn, and this film delivers that in spades. The tension between the two leads is palpable, and that final confession scene had me in tears. However, the side characters were pretty forgettable, and the middle act dragged a little. Still, a solid watch for fans of emotional BL.

I appreciate the ambition of blending ecological disaster with a coming-out romance, but the screenplay needed more coherence. The documentary subplot feels half-baked, and the characters' motivations are inconsistent. The ending tries to be poetic but comes off as abrupt. Beautiful to look at, but lacking narrative muscle.

I'm glad the film treats the power imbalance between the director and student with sensitivity—no coercion, just mutual pining. The ecological grief angle is a refreshing take on queer storytelling. That said, the film could have done more to address the survivors' trauma beyond the main couple's lens. A good start, not a perfect one.

The score is haunting—lots of ambient guitar and sparse piano that perfectly mirrors the desolate landscape. There's one track during the campfire scene that I've replayed dozens of times. Music saved the film for me when the pacing got slow. If you're an OST fan, this one's a gem.
