Set in rural Japan during the 1990s, *Smells Like Green Spirit* follows Mishima Futoshi, a gentle high school boy with long hair and a soft demeanor who becomes the target of relentless bullying for being perceived as gay. Rather than fighting back, Mishima quietly endures the abuse, already aware of his own sexuality. His life takes an unexpected turn when he forms a secret friendship with one of his former bullies, Kirino—a handsome classmate hiding his own deep struggles with gender identity. Together on the school rooftop, they share stolen moments of makeup, bento lunches, and the fragile comfort of being seen. As Kirino’s dreams of living authentically clash with his mother’s expectations, another bully, Yumeno, begins to question his own feelings and homophobia, gradually transforming from tormentor to protector. This poignant, beautifully acted coming-of-age story explores the harsh realities of queer youth in a conservative society, celebrating small acts of courage, the power of acceptance—both from loved ones and from oneself—and the bittersweet paths that lead to growing up.

I went in expecting a typical BL and got my heart ripped out in the best way. Yumeno’s journey from bully to the most tender, protective boyfriend is everything. That bridge confession scene? I sobbed. Araki Towa and Fujimoto Kodai have insane chemistry—every glance felt so real. Yes, it's heavy, but the love story is so worth it.

The drama tries to tackle too much in eight episodes, resulting in a rushed final act that leaves some characters' arcs feeling incomplete. While the acting is stellar, the tonal whiplash between comedy and extreme darkness didn't always land for me. Kirino's ending felt more like a narrative cop-out than a realistic choice, even if it's sadly common.

Visually, this is one of the most beautiful Japanese BL-adjacent dramas I've seen. The soft, nostalgic color grading captures 90s rural Japan perfectly—every shot of the rice fields, the school rooftop, and Mishima’s bedroom feels like a photograph. The slow-motion moments during the kiss and the final rooftop scene are framed with such care. A masterclass in visual storytelling.

Finally, a series that doesn't romanticize the closet or gloss over the trauma of bullying. I appreciated how it distinguished between Mishima (gay and comfortable with cross-dressing) and Kirino (likely a trans girl) without conflating their experiences. The sexual assault scenes are handled with appropriate gravity—they're disturbing but necessary to show the reality of being queer in a hostile environment. This is important viewing for anyone who thinks LGBTQ+ stories are only about fluffy romance.

As a huge fan of the manga, I was nervous about the adaptation, but they got so much right. Araki Towa IS Mishima—the mannerisms, the quiet strength. My only disappointment is the omission of the elevator scene and a few extra beats from the later chapters that really cemented Yumeno's devotion. Still, the ending is faithful in spirit, even if it’s a bit more ambiguous than the manga's happily-ever-after. Solid adaptation overall.
