Shujin-ko (主人公, 'Main Role') is a tender, low-budget Japanese web drama that follows a close-knit group of college students navigating the messy transition into adulthood. Each episode centers on different characters—ranging from a young man with empathic abilities who can feel others' emotions, to a woman struggling with self-esteem and job hunting, to a couple tested by societal expectations of masculinity. At its heart is the sweet, slowly blooming romance between Ikeda Yujiro and Hamaguchi Daisuke, a bisexual lead learning to accept himself. With tight, relatable vignettes, the series explores family conflict, first love, career anxiety, and the courage to be vulnerable. Despite its modest production, the writing is razor-sharp, and the ensemble cast delivers deeply human performances. This is a quiet gem about finding your own script—your own 'main role'—in life.

I'm absolutely smitten with Yujiro and Daisuke! Their chemistry is so natural and sweet—every scene together made me smile. The way Daisuke slowly opens up and accepts himself is beautifully done. Low budget? I didn't even notice because the emotions are so real. A perfect comfort watch for BL fans.

This drama handles the pressures of Japanese society—gender roles in relationships, the struggle for female self-worth in job hunting, and the burden of empathy—with surprising nuance. I especially appreciated how it didn't villainize anyone; even the cold mother gets a sympathetic backstory. It's a thoughtful slice of life that respects its characters.

Yes, the production value is low—some scenes feel like a student film—but the director compensates with clever color grading and framing that mirrors the characters' emotions. The sunny rooftop scenes contrast beautifully with the dim job-hunting montages. Indie charm at its finest. I just wish the audio mix was cleaner.

The writing is genuinely good for a low-budget web series, but some characters are too archetypal (the shy empath, the insecure girl, the perfect boyfriend). The romance needed a bit more buildup in the last two episodes—it felt a little rushed. Still, the emotional beats land well, and I respect what they achieved with limited resources.

The main theme 'Shujin-ko' by Ohashi Chippoke is an absolute earworm—I had it on repeat for days! The background music throughout is understated but perfectly matches the bittersweet tone. Even the ambient sounds of trains and city noise add to the immersive youth vibe. Music elevates this series from good to memorable.
