Three former university board game club members—Chinami, Hikaru, and Ayase—have carried their bond into their late twenties, meeting weekly for drinks, conversation, and rounds of karuta that often turn unexpectedly revealing. But when a quiet confession shatters their easy rhythm, the trio must navigate a tangle of unrequited feelings, a painful breakup, and the question of whether friendship can survive when love is no longer one-sided. Adapted from a celebrated poem, this series weaves the delicate rules of the card game into the emotional stakes of the heart: each match becomes a metaphor for timing, choice, and the courage to lose. Shitsuren Karuta is a tender, literary romance that celebrates the ache of longing and the quiet beauty of holding on—or letting go.

I am absolutely wrecked in the best way. The way they use karuta to mirror heartbreak is genius, and the chemistry between Chinami and Ayase had me gripping my pillow. This is the kind of slow-burn, poetic love story that makes you believe in soulmates. Pure emotional gold.

The premise is lovely, but the pacing drags in the middle episodes. Some conflicts feel repetitive—how many times can they play karuta before the metaphor wears thin? Still, the ending lands with real weight, and the acting saves it. A solid, if slightly overlong, character study.

Every frame of this drama belongs in a gallery. The lighting during the night-time karuta matches, the close-ups on trembling fingers, the soft color palette—it’s a masterclass in visual storytelling. Even if the plot meanders, I’d watch it on mute just for the cinematography.

The soundtrack is the unsung hero here. The piano motifs that shift from hopeful to sorrowful, the way silence is used between rounds of karuta—it broke me. I’ve already downloaded the OST loop. This is what happens when music and story breathe together.
