Kazuma returns to Tokyo after a decade in America, hoping for a fresh start. The first day at his new job, he's stunned to find Ren—the best friend he lost touch with under painful circumstances—now the star designer at their company. Their reunion is electric but fragile, filled with unspoken words and unresolved feelings. As they tentatively rebuild their bond, a working relationship evolves into a secret friends-with-benefits arrangement, but their past looms large. Flashbacks reveal the intimate teenage friendship that was shattered by a single traumatic incident, forcing them apart for ten years. Now, as adults, they must navigate office politics, lingering trauma, and the fear of repeating history. *Tokyo in April Is...* is a grounded, emotionally rich J-BL that doesn't shy away from serious issues—identity, consent, family rejection, and mental health—while celebrating the quiet power of love that refuses to fade. With nuanced performances, gorgeous cinematography, and a slow-burn romance that feels achingly real, this series is a must-watch for those who crave depth and authenticity in their BL dramas.

I am completely in love with Kazuma and Ren. Their reunion felt so real—the awkwardness, the longing, the way they slowly let their guard down. The scene where Kazuma cooks for Ren and just watches him eat? My heart melted. This is exactly the kind of mature, tender romance I live for. A masterpiece.

Started strong with a compelling setup, but the second half falls apart under clunky plotting. The villain Sanada is cartoonishly evil, and the endless flashbacks to scenes we just watched killed the momentum. Plus, Kazuma's mom's sudden 180 in the finale made no sense. I wanted to love it, but the writing let the actors down.

I appreciate how this drama didn't shy away from showing the real consequences of homophobia and family rejection. Ren's trauma is portrayed with nuance, and the 'love heals all' trope is somewhat subverted by showing the work it takes to communicate. The gay-for-you angle is dated, but the consent conversations and the depiction of Ren's depression felt very honest. A socially conscious watch.

As someone who read the manga multiple times, I was nervous. While the live-action hits all the major story beats and some scenes are frame-for-frame faithful, it loses the manga's emotional pacing. The adult actors lack the raw vulnerability of their younger counterparts in the flashbacks. Still, it's a respectful adaptation that captures the essence of the story—just not the magic.

Visually, this drama is a treat. The use of soft lighting and warm tones in the domestic scenes contrasts beautifully with the cold, blue-gray palette of the office and the rain-soaked flashbacks. The transparent umbrellas become a powerful motif—symbolizing both transparency and fragility. Even if the story stumbles, the cinematography keeps you hooked.
