Inn is a young Thai man living a quiet double life—he has a loving boyfriend, but he's still deep in the closet, especially when it comes to his traditional mother. One evening, a TV program harshly criticizes a homosexual relationship, and Inn sees his mother nod in agreement. That moment shatters his courage and forces him to confront a painful choice: stay hidden forever or risk everything to live authentically. With his patient boyfriend by his side, Inn hatches a plan to come out, hoping to bridge the gap between his mother's expectations and his true self. This raw, 30-minute short film captures the suffocating fear of rejection, the quiet strength of a partner's support, and the heartbreaking reality that love doesn't always conquer prejudice overnight. Filmed with documentary-like intimacy, 'Same Same Is Not the Same' offers a no-frills glimpse into a universal LGBTQ+ struggle through a specifically Thai lens, making it a poignant time capsule of early 2010s BL storytelling.

I know the production is rough and the sister is infuriating, but my heart ached so much for Inn and his boyfriend. That moment when they hold hands under the table before coming out? Pure gold. For a 30-minute short from 2015, it captures the fear and hope of coming out better than many longer series. Love is love, and this film proved it even with all its flaws.

The coming-out scene was so unrealistic—who announces their sexuality by stripping in front of their mom? And the sister just filming and giggling? That's not representation, that's a caricature. The acting was stilted and the ending felt rushed. I get it's low-budget, but the story needed way more work to feel authentic.

I appreciate the attempt to show the real fear of coming out to a conservative parent, but the execution raises red flags. The sister's behavior is textbook fetishization—she treats her brother's identity as entertainment for her friends. Also, the way the boyfriend essentially pushes Inn into coming out without full consent? Problematic. Important topic, poorly handled.

For a 2015 short, the natural lighting and handheld camera work give it a raw, almost documentary feel that suits the heavy subject. I loved the color grading—warm tones at the boyfriend's house, cold and harsh at Inn's home. Not a visual masterpiece, but the intentional contrast tells the story better than the script sometimes does.

The background score is minimal but effective—a simple piano melody that swells during the most emotional moments. It's not a lavish OST by any means, but the silence between the notes speaks volumes. The song that plays over the end credits has a bittersweet indie vibe that stuck with me long after the film ended.
