Set in a devout Catholic school in the Philippines, *Sakristan* follows Christian, a shy altar server caught between his faith and his heart. When the openly gay and rebellious Zach transfers to his school, an unlikely friendship blossoms into a tender romance that defies the rigid rules of their conservative community. As the two navigate secret dates, jealous classmates, and the painful weight of familial expectations—including Christian’s hidden drag queen father and Zach’s priest father—they must decide if their love is worth fighting for. Bold and unapologetically raw, this miniseries tackles themes of homophobia, religious hypocrisy, and self-acceptance with a mix of soapy drama and genuine emotion. While its low-budget production and uneven acting have divided viewers, its fearless storytelling and beautiful soundtrack have earned it a cult following among those seeking BL dramas that dare to challenge taboos.

I know the acting is rough, but honestly, the chemistry between Zach and Christian melted my heart. Their quiet moments together—like brushing their teeth in the morning—felt so real and intimate. I cried at the ending because it was so bittersweet. Not perfect, but I loved every second of their love story.

The premise had promise but the execution is a mess. Dialogues are cringey, the plot jumps around without any logical progression, and the side characters (especially the flamboyant gay friends) eat up screen time that should have been for the leads. I couldn't care less about any of them. Save yourself the 160 minutes.

Visually, it's hit or miss. Some shots have a nice vintage filter and capture the Filipino setting beautifully, but too many scenes feel like they were shot with a single static camera. The editing is choppy, and the color grading varies wildly. Still, the church and street locations give it an authentic charm that a higher budget might have polished away.

The OST alone makes this worth watching. Every episode has a perfectly placed track that amplifies the emotion—the title song and the instrumental pieces are gorgeous. I've added three songs to my playlist. Too bad the rest of the production couldn't match the music's quality, but as a soundtrack lover, I'm satisfied.

I appreciate the series for tackling homophobia within the Catholic Church, a topic rarely addressed in Filipino media. However, the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters relies heavily on stereotypes, and a kissing scene with a minor (actor age 16) feels exploitative. The story's heart is in the right place, but it needed more sensitivity and better representation.
