Problem student Toki Kaneda has a reputation as a troublemaker, but beneath his tough exterior lies a surprisingly pure and earnest heart. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets his new homeroom and PE teacher, the charismatic Ichiro Sahara. Instantly smitten, Toki's world tilts on its axis as he falls head over heels—much to his own dramatic, over-the-top dismay. Sahara, a former competitive swimmer with his own past regrets, finds himself charmed by Toki's unfiltered sincerity and unexpected kindness. What follows is a sweet, laugh-out-loud journey of self-discovery, friendship, and a blooming romance. While the series leans heavily into manga-inspired comedic exaggeration, it carefully navigates the delicate line between a student's crush and a teacher's moral boundaries. With a warm heart and a playful spirit, 'Mr. Sahara & Toki-kun' celebrates the courage it takes to love and grow, all while delivering a cozy, feel-good experience that will leave you smiling.

I absolutely fell in love with Toki! He's such a goofball with a heart of gold, and his dramatic reactions had me laughing out loud. Sahara is a sweet, patient teacher, and even though the age gap made me pause, the way they handled it—with clear boundaries and a time skip—felt respectful. Their final scene together melted my heart. Not the steamiest BL out there, but so charming and feel-good. I rewatch Toki's Snow White scene whenever I need a smile.

I see why people like the humor, but the series tries to do too much in 8 short episodes. The main couple's development is rushed—we never really see why Sahara falls for Toki beyond 'he's refreshing.' And Nekoto? We spend way too much time on a character introduced two-thirds in. His flashbacks are repeated so many times I started skipping. The side couple (Shinji and Takuya) is barely resolved. Feels like they ran out of budget. A decent one-time watch, but doesn't hold up to rewatch.

I struggle to rate this fairly because the teacher-student dynamic is inherently troubling. Yes, they wait until Toki graduates to become official, but the entire series romanticizes a relationship that begins with a power imbalance. Sahara is Toki's homeroom teacher—he can give grades, write reports. Toki is a minor for most of the show. The show glosses over this completely, never addressing the ethical issues. As a piece of fiction, it's cute, but I can't ignore the real-world implications. Not recommended if this bothers you.

As a fan of the original manga, I think this adaptation captures Toki's manic energy perfectly. Hachimura Rintaro embodies him—those exaggerated expressions are straight from the page. The drama trims some subplots but keeps the key moments. My main disappointment is how they handled the past connection; in the manga it feels more organic, while here it's a bit shoehorned. Still, for a short series, they did a solid job. I wish they could have done a few more episodes to flesh things out.

The color grading is a standout—warm yellows and golden tones throughout, giving it a nostalgic, almost film-like quality. I loved how the school corridors and sunlit gym were shot. That said, the budget constraints show: limited sets and repetitive locations. Some fight scenes feel awkwardly choreographed, but the overall visual consistency is pleasant. Toki's costumes and hairstyle change subtly as he matures, a nice touch. Not groundbreaking, but pleasing to the eye for a low-budget BL.
