Set in a conservative Taiwanese high school, this short film delicately follows Jian Bing Chen and Bi Ching Lo, two inseparable best friends who share a bond deeper than either dares to name. As they navigate the pressures of adolescence, they each harbor secrets—Bing Bing grapples with her feelings for a female classmate, while Ching Lo struggles with his own hidden desires. Together, they become each other's safe haven, learning to embrace their true colors in a world that demands conformity. With tender direction and a focus on quiet, authentic moments, *Ruby and Ice Ice* captures the bittersweet ache of first love, the fear of rejection, and the courage it takes to simply be yourself. It's a poignant, heartfelt glimpse into LGBTQ+ youth finding hope and understanding in a closed-minded society.

I absolutely melted watching Bing Bing and Ching Lo's quiet support for each other. Their friendship is so pure, and the way they're both figuring out their feelings is heartbreakingly beautiful. I just wish it were longer!

As a short film it works, but the pacing felt a bit rushed and some of the dialogue was too on-the-nose. I wanted more depth from both storylines, especially the lesbian romance. Still, it's a sweet effort for a 20-minute runtime.

The soft pastel color grading and the intimate framing really sold the emotional tension. Every shot of the two leads in their school uniforms felt like a painting. The director knows how to use visual storytelling to convey unspoken feelings.

I appreciate that the film tackles the fear of coming out in a conservative environment without relying on tragedy. The message about finding your 'true colors' is uplifting, but I wish the script had addressed the internalized homophobia more explicitly.
