River Knows Fish Heart is a charming Chinese web film that dives into the tender, messy world of first love between two high school musicians. When rich runaway Situ Xiao Yu (the 'Little Fish') transfers to a new school, he impulsively moves in with the reserved musical genius An He (the 'River'), who is suffering from creative block. What starts as a tense roommate arrangement slowly blossoms into a magnetic push-pull romance, fueled by shared dreams of winning a music competition. With a simple but heartfelt plot, the film explores themes of self-acceptance, obsession, and the delicate balance between pursuing your passion and protecting a newfound love. Expect sweet banter, soulful guitar melodies, and a slow-burn connection that feels as natural as a river finding its way to the sea. Despite its low budget, the movie delivers an emotionally resonant, coming-of-age story that will leave you yearning for more.

I absolutely loved this! The chemistry between River and Little Fish is electric—every scene they share feels so raw and intimate. That bathroom kiss? I had to rewind it twice. Sure, the production value is low, but the music and the slow-burn romance more than make up for it. A hidden gem for BL lovers who want something sweet but with a little edge.

I see why people enjoy this, but the story is incredibly formulaic and the pacing drags in the middle. The dubcon elements made me uncomfortable—some scenes felt less like romance and more like coercion. The music is lovely, but the plot relies too much on tropes without adding much depth. An okay watch if you have low expectations.

As a soundtrack lover, this movie hit all the right notes. The acoustic guitar pieces and the main theme are beautifully composed and perfectly capture the emotional highs and lows. I actually bought the OST after watching. The cast isn't super polished, but they sing genuinely, and that raw energy adds to the charm. Definitely worth it for the music alone.

I appreciate that this film tries to tackle a darker romance, but the power dynamics are deeply problematic. The 'dominant seme' constantly pushes the uke's boundaries, and it's framed as passionate rather than concerning. There's no real growth in consent or communication—just an 'I'll protect you even if you say no' vibe. Not a healthy model for young viewers. The cinematography is fine for a web movie, but the themes need a more critical lens.

Visually, this punches above its weight. Soft lighting, intimate framing, and a color palette that shifts from cold blues to warm golds as the relationship develops—very nice directorial choices. The acting is a bit stiff in places, but the music and camera work create a dreamy atmosphere that compensates. A solid, aesthetically pleasing watch for those who don't mind a flawed plot.
