Set against the lush, agrarian landscape of the Philippines in the early '90s, *Rich Boy, Poor Boy* is a quietly revolutionary romance that predates the modern BL wave by decades. The story follows Miguel, a wealthy, Americanized young man who returns to his family's provincial estate, bringing with him an air of entitlement and cultural detachment. There, he meets Romy, a strong-willed, quiet farmhand who works the land with a quiet dignity that challenges Miguel's every assumption. What begins as a clash of worlds—privilege versus grit, city versus soil—slowly blossoms into an unexpected, tender connection. Theirs is not a love story shouted from rooftops but one whispered in stolen glances, shared burdens, and the courage to see beyond class and expectation. As they navigate family pressures and societal boundaries, the film captures the emotional weight of forbidden love with raw, understated authenticity. A hidden gem of LGBTQ+ cinema, *Rich Boy, Poor Boy* offers a rare, pre-millennium glimpse of queer desire expressed without apology.

A true hidden gem. I was blown away by how much emotional weight this 1992 film carries. The chemistry between Miguel and Romy feels so organic despite the huge class divide. It's slow, quiet, and deeply moving. If you can find a copy, it's worth every frame.

The cinematography captures the Philippine countryside beautifully—wide shots of rice fields and old haciendas frame the internal loneliness of the characters. The pacing drags a bit in the middle, but the tender final act makes up for it. A historical curiosity that deserves restoration.

I appreciate what it tried to do for its time, but the plot moves at a snail's pace and some of the acting feels stagey. The class commentary is interesting, but the romance lacks the spark I was hoping for. Still, a respectful nod to early Filipino queer cinema.

This film is a quiet revolutionary act. It dares to show a gay romance without tragedy or punishment, set in a rural conservative society. The power dynamics between the wealthy Miguel and the farmhand Romy are handled with sensitivity—no coercion, just two people finding each other across a chasm of privilege. Almost 35 years later, its message still resonates.

I'm so glad I tracked this down. The way Miguel looks at Romy while he's working in the fields—pure longing! Their first kiss left me breathless. It's not flashy or explicit, but the emotion is so real. This is why I love discovering old BL; it reminds me that love stories have always existed, even when society refused to see them.
