In 2003, hard-working student Xia Zhi Chen is trapped between a grieving past and a dangerous present—his mother’s death and his father’s life as a gang leader have left him emotionally guarded. When the bright and persistent Li Xiang Wan transfers to his class and becomes his roommate, a reluctant bond forms. But Wan carries a secret: he’s gay, and his open advances toward Chen stir both confusion and an unexpected pull. What begins as a fragile friendship deepens into a love that defies their hostile environment of homophobic bullying, indifferent teachers, and violent family pressure. Told through a poignant frame story that flashes forward to their adult lives, *Red Balloon* weaves together two timelines of longing and regret. The red balloon becomes a haunting metaphor for the impossible choice: fly high or stay grounded? This eight-episode Taiwanese miniseries punches far above its short runtime, delivering a raw, bittersweet romance that refuses to sugarcoat the cost of being true to yourself.

I absolutely fell in love with Chen and Wan. Their chemistry jumps off the screen even when they're not touching—those longing looks in the rain? Perfection. Yes, it’s painful, but that makes their eventual reunion so much more rewarding. I sobbed for an hour after episode 6, but I'd do it again. True love really does wait.

The acting and music are solid, but the story felt rushed and disjointed. Why would Zhi Chen stay with his abusive father for years after becoming a lawyer? The teacher-student subplot is weirdly handled, and the side character Xu Yang deserved way more development. A longer runtime could have fixed most of these issues.

Visually, this is a feast. Every scene is bathed in melancholic lighting, and the flashback transitions using a camera shutter sound are brilliant. The red balloon motif is used sparingly but hits hard when it appears. I only wish the adult scenes were shot with the same care—the younger cast steals the show.

I appreciate the series' attempt to show realistic homophobia, but it stumbles badly on consent. That kiss is clearly non-consensual, and the script frames it as romantic after the fact. Also, the teacher-student affair is never called out as grooming. For a 2017 show, I expected more sensitivity from a queer narrative.

The music alone is worth the watch. That opening theme still gives me chills every time. The way the background score swells or cuts to silence at key moments—especially during the bullying scenes—is nothing short of cinematic genius. I’ve added three songs to my playlist. Absolutely iconic.
