In a sprawling historical fantasy, *Rebirth* weaves a tale of time-bending love and palace intrigue. Ten years after a chance encounter, Prince Ji Yu is haunted by the memory of a brave commoner, Long Yang, who once stopped him from executing innocent peasants. Their paths cross again in the present, but not as fate would have it — when an assassination attempt nearly kills the prince, Long Yang takes a mortal blow and is mysteriously sent one year into the past. Armed with knowledge of the looming tragedy, Long Yang reveals himself to Ji Yu, who recognizes the token he gave the boy years ago. As Ji Yu appoints him as his personal bodyguard, the two men navigate treacherous court politics, a jealous princess, and their own deepening bond. With stunning action sequences and a tender, slow-burn romance at its core, this Chinese web film blends time-travel, sacrifice, and forbidden love into a deeply emotional narrative that defies censorship constraints.

I’m completely swept away by this film. The way Ji Yu and Long Yang’s love develops through stolen glances and quiet loyalty is everything I want in a historical BL. The time-travel twist made their sacrifice even more meaningful. I’ve rewatched the scene where he gives him the token at least ten times. Pure emotional gold.

I wanted to like this, but the story is a mess. The time travel mechanic is never explained, and the political intrigue feels slapped together. Characters make irrational decisions just to move the romance forward. The actors try their best, but the script drags everything down. Not worth the hype for me.

For a web movie, the visuals are surprisingly solid. The dimly lit palace rooms, the flowing costumes, and the choreography in the fight scenes create a moody, romantic atmosphere. I loved how the camera lingered on the characters’ faces during key emotional beats. It’s not high budget, but the direction shows real care.

I appreciate that the film tries to show a same-sex romance within ancient Chinese court dynamics, but the power imbalance between prince and bodyguard is somewhat glossed over. Long Yang’s devotion feels more like duty than true equal partnership at times. Still, it’s a valuable piece of BL history and handles the relationship with more sensitivity than many peers.

The action sequences in this film are seriously underrated. The opening ambush scene and the final showdown have some sharp, well-choreographed sword fights that rival bigger wuxia productions. Long Yang’s desperation as he protects Ji Yu adds real emotional weight to the fights. I rewatch just for the combat.
