Lucas has harbored a secret crush on his best friend Ben for three long years, but fear of ruining their friendship has kept his feelings locked away. When Emma, a confident new student, enters their tight-knit duo and begins to pursue Ben, Lucas finds himself slipping into the role of a reluctant third wheel. This poignant 26-minute Thai short film dives deep into the emotional turmoil of silent devotion, internalized homophobia, and the courage it takes to finally speak the truth. As Lucas wrestles with jealousy and heartache, a series of unexpected events force both him and Ben to confront their own identities and the love that has always been there, waiting. Bilingual dialogue and a heartfelt coming-out narrative make Rebel Heart a raw, intimate exploration of friendship, acceptance, and the liberating power of being true to oneself.

The opening hook with Lucas as a third wheel is great, but the film loses its way by cramming in too many plot points. The mall montage and rushed family reconciliation felt jarring. Still, I appreciate the bilingual cast and the gutsy themes. Watchable if you’re in the mood for something raw.

This tiny film packs a punch for LGBTQ+ representation. It honestly shows internalized homophobia, forced outing, and a father’s prejudice – but also a mother’s loving defense. The bilingual script and Thai-American cast are rare gems. Yes, it’s rough around the edges, but the heart and message matter so much more.

I melted at the confession scene! The chemistry between Bug and Burdy is so natural and sweet. Even with the low budget, their longing looks and that kiss felt incredibly real. I wish the story had focused more on their love and less on the side drama, but I’ll take it for a 25-minute dose of pure BL fluff.

Zee’s original soundtrack and singing add a nice emotional layer to the short film. The music during the mall scenes and the final reconciliation really elevated the mood. That said, the audio mixing in some dialogue-heavy scenes could be better. A promising debut for a filmmaker with an ear for melody.
