Rainbow Prince is a gloriously campy Filipino BL musical that throws caution to the wind and dares to be the gay fairy tale we never knew we needed. When the dashing but reckless Prince Zeyn of the fictional kingdom Zurbania is forced to flee a palace coup, he lands in Manila and meets the sweet, grounded Mikey. What follows is a whirlwind of soul-searching, self-discovery, and absolutely ridiculous musical numbers. The prince hides his identity, Mikey tries to understand the mysterious stranger, and together they navigate a world of drag queens, bellhops, and a dog with impeccable comedic timing. It’s a story about being unapologetically yourself — and maybe falling in love while singing about it. The show gleefully smashes together Disney-style whimsy, BL tropes, and pure theatrical chaos. It’s not polished, but it’s bursting with heart and a fierce commitment to queer joy. Expect cringe, expect laughter, and expect to wonder how a banana budget got so big. This is a series that knows exactly what it is and doesn’t care if you judge it. It’s an experience.

I absolutely LOVED this hot mess! Zeyn and Mikey have ridiculous chemistry — they flirt like they're the only two people in the world. The songs are earworms, the drag queens are icons, and the fact that it's so proudly, loudly gay makes my heart sing. Sure, the acting is wooden in places, but who cares when you have a prince stripping off his shirt and serenading you? This is the campy BL fairy tale I didn't know I needed. I've already rewatched it twice.

I appreciate what they tried to do, but the execution is a mess. The plot is held together with string and wishful thinking — characters act irrationally, the pacing is all over the place, and the climax is laughably underwhelming. The acting is consistently amateurish, especially from Adrian Dionisio, who seems to rely on his looks and nothing else. I did laugh a few times at the sheer absurdity, but as a coherent story, this is a failure. Only watch if you want to turn your brain off completely.

Ken and Malik are the true stars! Every time they appeared on screen, the show got ten times better. Their dynamic is adorable and way more natural than the main leads. I wish they'd had a bigger subplot — their little romance was the only thing that felt real and heartfelt. The main story is a cringefest, but I powered through just to see more of those two. Also, did anyone else notice Malik's actor is related to an SB19 member? That's a fun bonus.

I'm a sucker for musicals, so I had to give this a shot. The songs are... interesting. Some are genuinely catchy power ballads, and the cast has decent singing voices (especially Eurwin and the actress playing the Queen). But the placement of songs is often jarring, and the choreography is basically 'jazz hands and hope.' The soundtrack isn't groundbreaking, but it has a certain charm. If you can get past the awkwardness of characters bursting into song mid-conversation, you'll find a few bops to add to your playlist.

I have to give credit where it's due: this is one of the most proudly queer BLs I've seen. The main couple are openly gay from the start and there's no 'oh I'm just confused' nonsense. However, the show has some problematic moments — the prince is very touchy-feely without clear consent in early episodes, and the banana scene is... yikes. The representation is important, but the execution could have been more thoughtful. Still, for a low-budget Filipino series, it's a step in the right direction for LGBTQ+ visibility in media.
