Quaranthings: Special is a rare and intimate treat for fans of the original web series, offering a director's cut of the pivotal final scene from Episode 4, 'Sardines.' Set against the isolating backdrop of pandemic lockdowns, this one-episode gem follows the tender, awkward, and deeply human connection between two young men navigating love, loneliness, and the cramped confines of quarantine life. As they fumble through a shared evening—with sardines as their unlikely romantic catalyst—the scene unfolds with raw, unpolished emotion, capturing the bittersweet magic of finding closeness when the world has shut down. More than a simple re-edit, this special expands the original moment with subtle camera shifts, extended dialogue, and nuanced performances by Royce Cabrera and Kyo Quijano that amplify the longing and vulnerability at the story's heart. It’s a short but powerful slice-of-life that celebrates how love can blossom even in the most constrained circumstances, leaving viewers with a warm, hopeful glow.

I am absolutely swooning. Royce and Kyo have this quiet, intense chemistry that makes my heart race. The way they look at each other over a can of sardines is more romantic than any grand gesture. This director's cut gave us a few extra seconds of eye contact and I am NOT okay. Perfect comfort watch for when you need a dose of gentle love.

As a standalone piece, the cinematography is simple but effective—soft lighting, cramped framing that mirrors the characters' emotional claustrophobia. The director's cut doesn't revolutionize the scene but it does offer a slightly better pacing and a more lingering final shot. If you're a fan of visual storytelling, the subtle differences are worth the 10-minute watch.

Look, I get that it's a special, but calling this a 'director's cut' is generous. A few alternative takes and a line or two extra doesn't change the fact that this is a single scene stretched thin. The original episode already told the story beautifully. This feels like a deleted scene bonus feature, not a must-watch on its own.

I appreciate how the special reinforces consent and communication in a fragile, uncertain romance. The hesitations, the verbal check-ins, and the way both characters respect each other's space while clearly wanting more—this is the kind of healthy, realistic representation I wish we saw more often in BL. It may be short, but it packs a meaningful social message.

I just discovered BL and this was my first watch. I loved how soft and real everything felt. No over-the-top drama, just two people being vulnerable. The sardines scene is now iconic in my mind. I immediately went to watch the full series after! Highly recommend for anyone who wants a gentle, emotional intro to the genre.
