In the rigid, hyper-masculine world of Singapore's mandatory National Service, Private Low Zi Peng is a young man trapped between duty and identity. The barracks, with its relentless drills and enforced camaraderie, becomes a pressure cooker where his carefully guarded secret—his homosexuality—threatens to implode. Already strained relations with his family push him further into isolation, until an unexpected connection with a fellow soldier offers a fleeting, dangerous reprieve. 'Purple Light' is a poignant short film that strips away the gloss of military bravado to reveal the raw, internal battle of a gay man fighting not just for his country, but for his own soul. It’s a quietly devastating exploration of love, fear, and the suffocating weight of a closeted life, all set against the stark backdrop of uniformed conformity. This film resonates long after the credits roll, a powerful glimpse into a rarely told story from Singapore.

I was not ready for how much this would affect me. The chemistry between the leads is so subtle but powerful—just one shared glance in the bunk makes my heart ache. It's the kind of slow-burn romance that hurts because you know it can't have a happy ending. Beautifully painful.

I appreciate the film's intentions, but pacing felt rushed due to its short runtime. The transition from tension to the romantic moment seemed abrupt, and several supporting characters are underdeveloped. Still, it's an important story, just wish it had more room to breathe.

The cinematography in 'Purple Light' is stunning for a short film. The use of harsh fluorescent lights in the barracks versus the warm, dim lighting in the clandestine scenes perfectly mirrors the protagonist's duality. Each frame feels deliberate and emotionally charged. A visual triumph.

As a queer Singaporean, I found this film both validating and frustrating. It bravely depicts the real trauma of mandatory National Service for closeted men, but I wish the narrative had more agency for the protagonist. The romance leans on secrecy without fully addressing the power dynamics of rank. Still, a necessary watch for the conversation it starts.

The musical score in 'Purple Light' is subtle but perfectly integrated. The soft piano themes during the quiet moments between the leads speak louder than words. It elevates the emotional weight of every scene. I've been humming the main motif for days.
