In the heart of Singapore, Charlie (Soh Deng Xun) has quietly nurtured a crush on his charming colleague Gabriel (Braven Yeo) for months, but his inability to express his feelings has kept them locked in a comfortable, platonic routine. Everything changes when their café is selected for a Valentine’s Day television special, and the two are tasked with crafting the perfect dessert recipe together. As the cameras roll and late-night baking sessions blend flour, sugar, and unspoken tension, Charlie and Gabriel discover that the sweetest ingredient might just be the love they’ve been too afraid to name. Pure Vanilla is a tender, bite-sized romance that celebrates the quiet thrill of a shared kitchen, the courage it takes to say “I like you,” and the magic of creating something beautiful—one delicate layer at a time. With its soft lighting, warm pastries, and a slow-burn confession that’s as satisfying as a first bite, this short film proves that sometimes the simplest recipes hold the deepest flavors.

I'm literally melting. The way Charlie looked at Gabriel while sifting flour—my heart couldn't take it. This is exactly the kind of soft, cozy BL I needed. The final confession scene had me kicking my feet. Pure Vanilla is pure joy.

It's cute, but let's be real—the 'let's bake a cake for a TV special' setup feels a bit contrived, and the resolution is predictable. For a short film, the pacing drags in the middle. Still, the leads have nice chemistry, so it's not a waste of time.

The color grading is warm and inviting—every shot of the café feels like a latte art Instagram post. I loved the close-ups of the mixing bowls and the soft focus on their faces. A few handheld shots were shaky, but overall a visually pleasing short.

I appreciated that Charlie’s crush is handled with patience—no forced proximity or boundary crossing. The moment where Gabriel asks for permission before a kiss was refreshing. It’s a small step, but it models healthy communication in romance.
