Prepare for a wildly unconventional royal romance! *Patalliro!* (2019) adapts the beloved manga into a live-action fantasy comedy that gleefully defies expectations. Crown Prince Patalliro du Malyner VIII of the diamond-rich kingdom Malynera is a delightfully ugly, mischievous, and utterly loyal ruler. Beneath his grotesque exterior lies a sharp wit and a fiercely just heart. When his throne is threatened by the Prime Minister and other shadowy enemies, the prince must navigate palace intrigue with his loyal (and handsome) bodyguard, the stoic Jack Bancoran. This is no typical BL—it’s a whirlwind of campy humor, slapstick chaos, and surprisingly tender moments. The film embraces its absurd premise, delivering laugh-out-loud gags alongside a genuine love story that blossoms between two very different men. With a vibrant fantasy setting, a cast clearly having the time of their lives, and a prince who proves beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, *Patalliro!* is a sparkling gem for anyone craving a BL that’s equal parts ridiculous and heartwarming.

I went in expecting pure silliness and came out with a genuine soft spot for Patalliro and Jack. Their bond is so unique—built on loyalty and mutual respect rather than typical flirting. Yes, the makeup on Patalliro is over-the-top, but Kato Ryo's performance makes you forget all about it. The final scenes between them actually made me tear up! A hidden gem for romantics who love a good laugh.

As a longtime fan of the original manga, I was nervous about this adaptation. They definitely streamlined a lot of side plots and changed some character dynamics, but I have to admit—the core spirit is there. Patalliro's mischievous humanity and Jack's deadpan loyalty are perfectly captured. The casting is spot-on. My only complaint is the pacing felt rushed in the second half. Still, it's a fun watch for manga readers, just don't expect a panel-by-panel remake.

This film is a visual treat! The production design of Malynera is gloriously tacky in the best way—neon colors, overdone costumes, and that ridiculous crown. I loved how the camera work leaned into the chaos, with Dutch angles and rapid cuts during the comedy scenes. It feels like a live-action cartoon, but there are also some genuinely beautiful, soft-lit close-ups of the leads that give the romance room to breathe. A feast for the eyes.

The soundtrack is delightfully eccentric—mixing orchestral pomp with bubblegum pop. There's a recurring theme that sounds like a deranged music box, which perfectly underscores Patalliro's chaotic energy. The insert song during the climactic scene is surprisingly emotional and really elevated the moment. Not the best BL OST I've heard, but it's memorable and suits the film's tone perfectly.

I appreciate the attempt at camp, but the plotting is a mess. The political intrigue is laughably thin, the villains are cartoonish, and the romantic development relies on a series of coincidences. The humor often falls flat for me because it's so broad and repetitive. That said, Patalliro himself is an interesting character, and I laughed at a few scenes. If you want a tight story or believable stakes, look elsewhere. For pure absurdist fun, maybe.
